Letter to the Editor: Thank You for Open Door Pride Week

Thank you to Sturgeon Bay Mayor Birmingham and Council members Catarozoli, Hayes, Ward, Avenson, Allmann, Wiederanders and Hauser for proclaiming June 18th through 24th as Open Door Pride Week. Open Door Pride is a grassroots organization working with the City of Sturgeon Bay to ensure that this is a safe and welcoming place for all to live, work, and visit.

When I moved here two years ago, I was not sure what life was like for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and/or transgender people. I could not readily find very many people who openly cared about the wellbeing of people who identify as LGBTQ+. The community’s profile was so low as to be nearly invisible.

It was gratifying to help organize the first Open Door Pride gathering in Martin Park last year. About 150 people attended. This year’s festival on Saturday, June 23rd will likely draw an even larger crowd of supporters – allies, as well as LGBTQ+ people. The festival on Saturday will be the fifth event of our First Open Door Pride Week. Other events are scheduled for the prior Tuesday through Friday evenings, hosted by Lockwood Gallery, Makers Space, Writers Night in partnership with Write On Door County at Tambourine Lounge, and Dancin’ On The Door in Egg Harbor, and affirm the desire of local establishments and organizations to support our efforts. Details of our week can be found at the opendoorpride.org website.

We invite all Door County residents and visitors to join us at the Open Door Pride Festival on Saturday, June 23rd, in Martin Park, and to attend our various events throughout the week.
