Letter to the Editor: Thanks for Attending Salute to Veterans Dinner

The members of the Door County Veterans Service Council would like to thank everyone that attended the Salute to Veterans Dinner on Saturday evening, Nov. 10, at Corpus Christi Parish Social Hall. All of the proceeds from the dinner will be used to help needy veterans in Door County.

The Veterans Service Council would like to recognize the Catholic Community of the greater Sturgeon Bay area for putting the dinner together. It was a wonderful evening that we will remember for a long time. The four Catholic parishes that planned the dinner and made it happen are Corpus Christi and St. Joseph in Sturgeon Bay, St. Peter & Paul in Institute, and Holy Name of Mary in Maplewood. Thank you to Father Carl Schmitt and Father Bob Stegmann for their guidance and support.

A special thank you to Bill Sauve, Parish Mission Planning Special Events Coordinator and his Special Events Committee – who did a huge amount of work in putting the dinner together. Another special thank you to our guest speaker, Vietnam veteran Reverend Michael Morris, for his inspiring words.

The Veterans Service Council would also like to thank all of the volunteers and organizations that made the dinner such a big success.   Thank you to Mrs. Heidi Hintz and the volunteer members of the Sturgeon Bay High School band for all of the great patriotic music. We are especially thankful for all of the parish and community partners that provided tremendous support – to include Jason and Laura Estes of Sonny’s Pizzeria for cooking all the food, Boy Scouts Jack Konop and Ryan Melville, Door County Printing, Door County Coffee, Maas Floral, Flanigan Distributing, the Knights of Columbus, St. Ann Society of Corpus Christi Parish, St. John Bosco School, Quad Catholic parish youth volunteers, Genesis Program for Elementary Religious Education, Bill Graf and Roger Blasier – color guard from VFW Post 3088, Terry Kovarik from Door County Daily News, and all of the media of Door County.

I apologize if I missed anyone – so many people helped out and volunteered!

Joe Heilman, Chairman, Door County Veterans Service Council
