Letter to the Editor: That Holiday Spirit

The holiday season brings about countless acts of kindness and generosity. My 93-year-old father was the recipient of such a gesture. No longer driving, he is homebound in his apartment at The Meadows of Scandia Village. Unable to be with dad on his birthday, I called his favorite restaurant, Al Johnson’s of Sister Bay, from my winter home in Chicago. I asked if I could arrange for him to get some Swedish pancakes, meatballs and, of course, lingonberries, delivered for his birthday lunch. The folks at Al’s not only offered to drop off lunch for Dad, but even refused payment when I attempted to give them my charge card number. They simply stated that it was the holidays and they would love to do it for my dad.
