LETTER TO THE EDITOR: The Chaos Is Unacceptable

The Wisconsin Republican Party and Wisconsin Supreme Court have reached a new and dangerous low by rescinding Gov. Evers’ Safer at Home order without having another plan in place. There is still a pandemic, and there is no vaccine. COVID-19 is still among us. The economic and personal devastation that it has brought to Door County and our country is massive. But it’s not caused by a governor or a plan you don’t like. It’s caused by a highly infectious virus.

As of this writing, we are approaching 90,000 deaths in the United States due to the coronavirus. Nationwide, however, the numbers of new cases and deaths are going down. We have to connect the dots. This is happening because of social distancing, staying at home and wearing a face covering. This is a public-health strategy that is working and has kept the cases in Wisconsin relatively low. Governor Evers’ plan was

working.

To abruptly end it with no plan whatsoever is thoughtless and dangerous. This kind of political one-upmanship endangers us all. Yes, let chaos reign … Let everyone in our state and from out of state come and drink in our bars with no social distancing in place!

The Republican chaos in Washington and now Wisconsin is unacceptable. The lack of empathy for the human toll this virus has caused is heartless. I think it’s bogus to think we can get back to business as usual. According to recent polls, most Americans want to continue social distancing, wearing masks and being cautious about how and where they venture away from home.

Where is our truth giver, Dr. Fauci from the CDC? We need truthful, accurate, scientific and medical information coming from our elected leaders. Because this will not happen until Joe Biden becomes president this November – and until gerrymandering ends in Wisconsin so we can have a truly representative legislature instead one rigged by our state Republicans – I’ll rely on Gov. Evers and Wisconsin’s public-health officials for my information about how to proceed.
