Letter to the Editor: Vote for Damion Howard for Sturgeon Bay School Board

I encourage Sturgeon Bay voters to support Damion Howard for the Sturgeon Bay School Board in the April 6 election. Damion graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1996. He holds a B.S. in business and hospitality management from the University of Phoenix. His four children – Keon (18), Ayanna (12), Isabel (8) and Greyson (6) – currently attend Sturgeon Bay public schools.

Damion Howard has worked as food program director at the Door County Boys & Girls Club. That experience has given him both personal fulfillment and an understanding of the needs of local youngsters.

Damion and his wife, Nicole, were actively involved in the Parent

Teacher Organization. Both volunteered in YMCA century bike races and triathlons. Their community involvement underscores their dedication to families and children in Sturgeon Bay.

Damion Howard describes Sturgeon Bay as a great school district, and he hopes to make it even greater by providing minority students and their parents a voice.

He explains why he’s running:

“As a former student and now father of four children enrolled in Sturgeon Bay Public Schools, I am encouraged by what I have seen. I would like to see the district encourage more diversity in its daily practices. I recommend that the Sturgeon Bay School District (SBSD) provide more opportunities for students and staff alike to engage in experiences reflecting the multicultural differences of its student body.

“Teaching and modeling tolerance should be an expanded vision. I suggest more course offerings which include the histories, values and perspectives of minority students. It takes a village to raise and educate our children, and all of us are responsible.”

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction reported an 18.4% minority population in SBSD in its 2018-19 report card. Damion Howard will provide a broader vision for the future education of all Sturgeon Bay students.

He is a former student of mine. As a retired teacher, he makes me proud. I urge you to vote for Damion Howard for school board April 6.
