Letter to the Editor: We’re Coming Together When We Need It Most

My wife, Kathleen, went to get her first COVID-19 vaccination at the Door County firehouse. No one asked whether we were Democrats or Republicans. It was everything that makes me proud to be an American and a resident of Door County.

Everyone there was there for one reason: to administer vaccines calmly, efficiently and with great care. From the police officers directing traffic to the information-takers patiently assisting those who were more than a little nervous, everything was carried out under the watchful eye of the Department of Public Health officials who were present.

On to the very pleasant paramedic who administered the injection my wife never felt and who informed us of any and all possible side effects. Next, on to the firefighters and paramedics who were there to assist us, should we have needed it, as we waited during the mandatory, 15-minute observation time while they moved from car to car in 10-below-zero cold.

The efficiency of this operation is to be recognized, but it must also be understood that none of this works without the help of all us. And so it was: All of us took part, and all of us came together at a time when we needed it most.

So the story continues: neighbors helping neighbors, people helping people. I have seen the cold, and it is mine. Stay safe and warm.
