Letters to the Editor Jump-start Publication

Area resident Bruce Joffe had been working on his new book, The Gospel According to Facebook: Social Media and the Good News, for nearly two years when a series of Letters to the Editor published in the Peninsula Pulse motivated him to complete his message of how God’s grace, love and reconciliation is being shared anew courtesy of today’s social media.

But it’s not the same old, rugged cross that’s being touted here, the author warns, as he prepares for a reading featuring these letters on Feb, 24 at 7 pm. Open to all in the community – believers and skeptics alike – the free reading will be held in the sanctuary of Hope United Church of Christ Church, located at the corner of 12th and Michigan in Sturgeon Bay.

“The letters, published this fall, dealt with whether we as a community were condoning sinful behavior by promoting a same-sex ‘Commit with Pride’ weekend sponsored by the Door County Visitor Bureau,” explains Joffe, a college professor and ordained pastor who takes issue with the “God said it, I believe it, that’s all there is to it” mentality about the Bible.

He says an increasing number of Christians are now getting away from this all-or-nothing (literal) thinking about the Bible and re-examining the core values of their faith … and what they believe.

The Gospel According to Facebook: Social Media and the Good News is available from all online booksellers and some local retail bookstores.
