  • We will publish only one letter  by a given author within a 30-day period. Multiple letters by different authors addressing similar topics may be omitted, and in most cases, we do not publish letters that have appeared in other publications.
  • The Peninsula Pulse reserves the right to edit and refuse letters, to add titles to or retitle them, and to print them at the time of our discretion.
  • All opinions expressed in letters are those of their authors and not those of the Peninsula Pulse, its owner or staff.
  • Letter to the Editor: Profiling: Not So Fast!

Profiling has caused great harm in our society, rightly sparking outrage against it. It’s a basic element of rage, rightly or wrongly held, against monuments to our past. But in dealing with it, dispassionate thought is necessary. What exactly is profiling?  Two examples of bad: Some Black individuals smash windows and loot; therefore, all Black […]

  • Letter to the Editor: A Conservative Speaks about Mask Wearing

I was impressed by conservative Republican Karen Hughes’ thoughts about wearing masks. The following are excerpts from her opinion piece published July 1, 2020, in the Washington Post. Hughes was counselor to the president and undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs during the George W. Bush administration. “When leaders said, ‘We are […]

  • Letter to the Editor: An Open Letter to the Door County Board of Supervisors

Dear Supervisors, I’m extremely disappointed with the Door County Board of Supervisors’ decision not to pursue a mask ordinance for Door County. The reasoning seems to be that “it’s too difficult.” These are difficult times for everyone. We will get through it if we all do our part. I feel your part is to take […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Impromptu Parade a Reminder of ‘How Lucky We Are’

It was all so serendipitous: Let’s have a parade! That’s all it took for three friends and residents of Glidden Drive to pull off an impromptu parade. Our “town crier,” Barbara Mallien, got the word out to all of the residents. We invited folks to join the parade. On the Fourth of July, there were […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Let’s Get to a New Normal

Just want to say that according to Dr. Richard Hogan of Door County Medical Center in an article published in the Pulse on May 29, “Wearing masks should be the new normal in Door County.” The Door County Board of Supervisors needs to revisit this topic, and this time have a roll call. How embarrassing […]

  • Letter to the Editor: The Right of Revolution

Throughout history, when the wealthy, aristocratic ruling class becomes excessively greedy, oppressed citizens eventually revolt. This right of revolution comes from the philosophy that all people have the right to life, liberty and a fair share of wealth. When this is not happening, people have banded together to instigate a revolution and replace the government […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Help the Baileys Harbor Green Site

In recent years, Baileys Harbor has been fortunate to have access to the Green Site facility, which promotes recycling and provides a place to take compostable yard waste. Our Baileys Harbor maintenance crew has done an amazing job of caring for the Green Site – many thanks! And, because it always looks so good out […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Anonymous Cowards

It was sad but not surprising to read the “Dear Anonymous Caller” letter in the Pulse. It does seem that there is an element of our society that prefers to make anonymous calls to the police, make obscene gestures while driving by in a cloud of exhaust fumes, and parade around carrying assault weapons with […]

  • Letter to the Editor: The Choice

Letter to the Editor: The Choice Since the 2008 election, American voters haven’t been choosing “business as usual.” We are fed up, sick of the status quo of the state and its never-ending hunger for more power and control. Obama in 2008 and 2012 provided that choice. He was a community organizer and a young, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Newport Wilderness Society Indebted to G. Leonard Apfelbach

The Newport Wilderness Society and the people of Wisconsin lost a good friend and benefactor with the passing of Dr. G. Leonard “Len” Apfelbach.  I recently received two very different email messages that were actually linked. The first asked whether the Newport Wilderness Society had an upcoming astronomy program at Newport State Park – the writer […]

  • Letter to the Editor: To the Sister Bay Village Board

We residents of Sister Bay trust that you not only act in our best interests but also see the big picture and plan long-term for our village, especially as members of our community try to open their businesses and restart our local economy. It’s wonderful to see so many businesses open and people back to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Back the Need to Keep Us All Safer: Require Masks

Please help us. Give our businesses the support of county and/or local government to keep their employees and everyone in our community safe.  Seeing the masses on the street and milling around outside venues is both encouraging and frightening. Some of our businesses – the ones that have the physical space to make it possible – are […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Black Lives Matter and J-1 Visas

Instead of what I consider to be empty Black Lives Matters protests and writing letters to representatives across the state, why don’t local protestors encourage and recruit minority high school students from Milwaukee for local waitstaff, cooking and housekeeping positions? I find it hypocritical to protest equal rights and at the same time recruit hundreds […]

  • Letter to the Editor: To the Person Who Stole My Propane Tank

This is just for the person who went in my backyard and stole the propane tank I just got filled for my grill. I am a 62-year-old crippled man living on a fixed income, not always making it month to month. I have peripheral neuropathy (nerve palsy), which makes it hard to walk. I can […]

  • Letter to the Editor:

Museums and Monuments Serve Different Purposes Debra Fitzgerald’s June 19, 2020, Editor’s Note confused two issues that merit clarification. I agree that we can’t change the country’s racist history, and “dogged persistence in prying them out [is] required to effect long-lasting and meaningful change.” However, I support the removal of offensive, painful reminders of that […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Removing Monuments Moves Us Forward

The Editor’s Note in last week’s Perspectives lacked a certain “dogged persistence” into “prying out” how these monuments have always been and still remain symbols of white supremacy. It isn’t simply a historical case of “It was.” The racism and oppression that these monuments symbolize is an “It is.”  The people who are calling for […]

  • Letter to the Editor: ‘Just Suppose …’

It’s June 19, and my wife and I are on high alert. Why? We have family in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who live, work and own businesses not far from the places where politically charged events are scheduled today and tomorrow. My daughter there tells me that I am lucky to be safe and in the “cheap […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Higher Callings Continue

Although I’m normally a comfortable observer of cultural and political world events, the current media narrative on race and law-enforcement relations has driven my entry to the Pulse’s opinion page. The stern privilege of being older and experienced allows me a contrary perspective on this already crowded stage. I trust I am not alone. That […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Remembering Bill Harder

The Door County Maritime Museum and Lighthouse Preservation Society is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Bill Harder, president of the museum’s board of directors. Bill served as president of the museum for the past eight years, and during that time, he was a driving force in making the museum’s three venues – in […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Systematic Transformation of our Police System Needed

Today 1 percent of American households own more wealth than the bottom 90 percent combined. This disparity of wealth and opportunity in our country is the highest it’s been since 1962.  The police in our communities are given the responsibility of managing our unequal system, which has, in turn, led to an economy of punishment […]
