  • Letter to the Editor: West Side Story

The west side development area is ripe with opportunity. I envision a shanty village with a variety of small retail shops, ranging from a cozy coffee shop like, 5th and Jefferson, to a specialty deli/convenience shop like Marchants, or Main Street Market, a Hometown pub, like Neighborhood Pub, or Kitty O’Reillys, maybe a candy shop, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Move Internet Ahead in Liberty Grove

I am writing this to let everyone know that there is something that they can do proactively to help move Door County into the 21st century with respect to our internet services. Many people have poor (or no internet) and/or the internet service is limited in some way – either in speed or limits on […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Support the Sturgeon Bay School District

The Door County League of Women Voters urges residents of the school district of Sturgeon Bay to support their school’s educational programs. Since 1927 the League of Women Voters at the national, state and local levels has studied and promoted improvement of public education. The League supports a system of school funding which includes an […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Fair Maps

Given that we are now in such a politically polarized time in our country, the recent League of Women Voters commentary in the Perspectives column in The Peninsula Pulse (February 22, 2019) makes complete sense to me. The League is calling for redistricting reform in Wisconsin, supporting voting maps drawn by a nonpartisan entity. The […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Consider Voting for Shawn Fairchild

This coming April 2 election is a pivotal one for the citizens of Sturgeon Bay. Two candidates will be competing for the mayoralty, in addition to several key city council races on the ballot. While it is tempting for some to dismiss those seeking public office as being “all alike” (shorthand for, What does it […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Of ‘Special Interest’

Sturgeon Bay is being sacked by special interest groups intent on the promotion of their narrow agenda. It will drain the resources of Sturgeon Bay, block the view of a waterfront parcel, stick us with an ugly, deteriorating building and prohibit the generation of substantial tax money from the property. Prohibiting a development on the […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Students Involved in Our Community

The Door County chapter of the Christ Child Society wishes to express its gratitude to the students of our local YMCA’s Youth and Government program. In addition to learning, discussing and debating, state government functions, each year these young adults nominate, elect, and provide aid to a local charity. Our chapter was delighted to accept […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Support for Redistricting Reform

Voters in district one have support for the League of Women Voters call for redistricting reform from our Representative, Joel Kitchens. Please see the League’s statement in the Pulse on February 22, 2019.   At a public listening session on February 1st in Sturgeon Bay Representative Kitchens, when asked, stated while he would not introduce […]

  • Letter to the Editor: In Support of Sarah Evenson

I am writing in support of Sarah Evenson for City Council Alderperson District 5. Although I am not a resident of Sturgeon Bay, and thus am unable to vote for Sarah, I wholeheartedly support her candidacy. I have known Sarah since she moved back to Wisconsin in 2015. I met her when she was hired […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Support for Sarah Evenson

Sarah Evenson is running for District 5 council alderwoman for Sturgeon Bay. She deserves the support of everyone living there. I have known Sarah since she first moved back to Door County. She has an amazing ability to communicate and work with people of all backgrounds and ages. I’ve been impressed by her honesty and […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Dave Ward for Mayor

About 35 years ago I first hired Dr. Dave Ward as an expert finance witness for a trial. As our trial relationship continued, our friendship grew. He became a good friend but please know I write this as someone who knows him to be a very accomplished person. During those 35 years, Dave has had/experienced […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Time For A Grand Idea

Many have scoffed at grand ideas. But what is the harm in discussing grand ideas? We didn’t have national parks until a Republican president acted. Teddy Roosevelt initiated a “grand” idea to preserve and protect American land providing national parks for all our citizens to enjoy. Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower had the “grand” idea to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Hoping to Bring ‘Fresh Ideas’ to Egg Harbor Town Board

The Pulse has always done a thorough job providing extensive coverage of local elections and issues that matter to this community. As a result, voters are now better informed than ever and new faces are energized to get involved in local affairs. I am one of those and have chosen to seek a seat on […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Brazilian Tailings Dam Disaster: Is Wisconsin Next?

The recent collapse of a mine tailings dam in southeastern Brazil has already resulted in 169 fatalities, leaving an estimated 200 people still missing according to rescue workers. The spill flooded nearby homes, submerging cars and buses under a river of reddish-brown sludge. This environmental disaster should raise red flags for Michigan regulators and the […]

  • Letter to the Editor: There Is No National Emergency on Our Border!

Friends, neighbors, countrymen and women, let’s be honest. There is no evidence to support the President’s declaration of a national emergency.   The “caravan” of people from Honduras that walked 2,700 miles through Central America is composed mainly of children and family members who are fleeing for their lives from drug and gun wars that […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Let’s Welcome All to Our Events

A recent Visitor Bureau survey of visitors revealed that almost two-thirds of our visitors are over 50 and almost half are 60 years or older. Almost 30 percent of the resident population of Door County is over 65. According to the Census Bureau at least 40 percent of people aged 65 or older had at […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Rep. Gallagher Carbon Fee and Dividend Support?

This is a case made for Congressman Mike Gallagher to support the bipartisan Energy Innovation and Carbon Fee and Dividend Act that is currently gathering sponsorship in Congress. A carbon fee and dividend concept has been around for quite some time and has been covered by the Pulse. A carbon tax (fee) and dividend proposal […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Is the Economic Sky Falling?

Whenever there is the slightest proposal to raise the top marginal tax rate on those with very high incomes, such as the one being floated of 70 percent tax rate for earnings more than $10 million in a single year, there is a cry that the increase will hurt the nation’s economy. The problem with […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Unfulfilled Promises

People seem to be alarmed by the news that a congresswoman has proposed a top marginal income tax rate of 70 percent. That would be alarming, if it applied to an entire income. But “marginal tax rates” are part of our “progressive” tax system, meaning that they apply only to income over and above certain […]

  • Letter to the Editor: More Plans for the Granary

Once or twice each month, when in Sturgeon Bay, I use the Oregon Street bridge which gives me an  unobstructed view of the building known to most of us as the “granary.” That provides me license to claim to be an observer which can lead one to develop an opinion on that observation. I have […]
