  • Letter to the Editor: Boys Will Be Boys

Comparing Anita Hill’s sexual harassment allegations against Clarence Thomas in 1991 with Professor Ford’s allegations against Brett Kavanaugh has led me to believe that while progress for women has been made in the intervening years, much, much more still needs to occur. The discussion of the sexual assault allegation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Tacky Play

I retired and decided to move from Iowa to Door County in May 2015. I love sports so I decided to support the area teams in all sports and cheered for them for all games unless they were playing an Iowa team. I enjoyed the recent Badger-Hawkeye game, and would have accepted the loss, that […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Good vs. Bad Neighbor Farmers

I heard on a Door County radio station a local dairy farmer whining that if the county’s townships continue to restrict manure spreading that there wouldn’t be any farmers left in the county. This farmer is a classic poor neighbor farmer. A good neighbor example  farmer is the Peterson’s IN Appleton, Wis. “IN” is in […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Hundreds of Children Remain Separated at Our Border

As I wrote earlier in the summer, the sad predicament for families on our southern border (children in cages, parents lost in the system) is the result of the Trump/Sessions policy of “zero tolerance” for entry into the U.S. without documents and immediate incarceration of those who try to enter for asylum, reunification with family […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Tammy Baldwin Takes Stand for Good Health Insurance Choices

Republican claims that their solution for curbing rising health insurance costs will save money enabling more people to purchase policies is probably true, but buyer beware! Those policies are the same kind of “junk” that left many who thought they were insured with uncovered medical bills. Many with pre-existing conditions could not find insurance they […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Questions for Our Representatives

One thing that we can all agree upon is that our government needs fixing at all levels. It is clear to everybody that the need to drain the swamp has never been greater. OK, but what, exactly, needs to change? There are four totally nonpartisan issues that we must insist that our representatives address if […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thanks for Supporting Inaugural Hunter’s Raffle

The Belgian Heritage Center (BHC) wishes to thank everyone who came out to support our first ever Hunter’s Raffle Event last Saturday, Sept. 15. We were greatly pleased with everything from gun raffle ticket sales to the AYCE meal. We’re especially thankful to our pair of speakers: Ed Thiry, owner/brewmaster of Thumb Knuckle Brewing, who […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Tammy Baldwin Protects Health Care for Pre-existing Conditions

Wisconsin’s United States Senator Tammy Baldwin has consistently stated she will not support any health care legislation that promotes junk health care plans or takes away affordable coverage for people with pre-existing conditions. Approximately 2.4 million Wisconsinites (according to Citizen Action Wisconsin) have health conditions that could be designated as pre-existing conditions. Before the Affordable […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Because Race Matters

Because race matters, thank you to the 150-plus visitors who toured the Color Brave Photo Project: Black and Brown Voices, A New Narrative exhibit at Hope United Church of Christ two weeks ago. Your presence that weekend, your engagement with the photographs and personal narratives, and your commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive Door […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Red, White and Blue

For some 50 years the Republican Party has been identified with the color Red, the Democratic Party with the color Blue. While there is no legal requirement for these associations, they are so ingrained in us that they are part of our subconscious. Almost every description of politics on almost every television show and newscast […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Nicotine Recovery Makes Other Recovery Better

September is National Recovery Month, which increases awareness and understanding of mental health and substance abuse disorders and celebrate the people who recover.   In our area the Door County Alcohol and Other Drug Coalition work to prevent and reduce substance abuse and related problems by providing leadership, education and support to communities and institutions […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Bringing the Blue Wave Home

Caleb Frostman flipped State Senate District 1, a 40-year red seat into the blue column. Supreme Court Justice Rebecca Dallet’s spring election margin in Door County was significant. The August primary drove hundreds more Door Democrats to the polls than Republicans. Sturgeon Bay elected a progressive city council with a female majority for the first […]

  • Letter to the Editor: A Very Serious Time

I read the letter Patrick Cerra wrote with regard to John McCain. How wonderful it was to read about a man who really loved and served his country honorably. We need to follow this example and be a country that respects each other and works together. We are on a path of losing this country’s […]

  • Letter to the Editor: ‘Republican Headquarters Open for Business’

In response to Richard Woldt’s letter I see in addition to his encouragement to stop in and pick up signs, he invites constituents and fans of the elephant to tell us “what our candidates can do to gain your trust and hopefully your vote.” I think these candidates have already expressed their views and the […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Roundabouts Not Pedestrian Friendly

It is good to hear that the Ahnapee trail is completed to Michigan Street in Sturgeon Bay. The pedestrian traffic this may bring reminds us of an experience crossing at the roundabout at Hwy 57/42 and Michigan Street last winter. We were walking westbound along the south pedestrian crossing and were almost run down twice. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thanks for Making Safe Kids Day Possible

On Aug. 18, 2018, Safe Kids Day Door County individuals, organizations and businesses shared health and safety tips at the 2nd annual free and interactive event at the Door County Fairgrounds in Sturgeon Bay. Made possible by a Door County Public Health Wisconsin State Health Prevention grant, Safe Kids Day provided fun and informational tips […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Witches, Witches Everywhere

Mr. President, I must confess, Sir, that I am concerned. No, I’m more than concerned; I’m alarmed. In fact, I am downright terrified. If there’s a word that trumps “terrified” for how I feel right now, only you would know it since, as you’ve said many times, you “know the best words” and who are […]

  • Letter to the Editor: References Please

Two of the letters in the August 24th issue had me wondering where people get their “facts.” The letter from Judy Brodd claimed that in a recent poll 81 percent of Americans felt health care was the most important issue to be considered for the fall elections. The only poll I could find that had […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Another Story?

Thank you for the article [“Time to Be Honest About Milk” by Jim Lundstrom], I suspect you have taken some heat for it. These stories need to be told and told often. Dairy is under a lot of pressure. Did they do it to themselves…another story? We cannot live without farmers. What we all want […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Republican Headquarters Open for Business

Our Republican Headquarters is now open at 43 S. Madison Ave., Sturgeon Bay, which is a short two blocks south of the Steel Bridge. We’re in the former Sonny’s Pizza building. Look for all the red lights and our elephant proudly standing in the window. Come talk to us about our candidates, the issues and […]
