  • Letter to the Editor: We Need a Better Way

Maybe some of you read the same article that I did. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics more than one half of American babies are at risk for malnourishment. Quite a statistic for one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Does it have to be that way? Is our economic system so perverse […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thoughtful Deliberation Needed on ‘Welfare Reform’

Governor Walker has called for a special session of the Legislature to begin work on a package of bills related to “welfare reform.” Interestingly, the term “welfare” has long been thrown around loosely to describe any program for the poor – from food stamps to housing assistance. Traditionally the term has referred to the federal system […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Wake Up, Door County

As a frequent visitor and supporter of tourism to Sturgeon Bay (I started in 1964 as a child), I watch and read from afar about your beloved granary and the ensuing battle over its future existence. Please don’t make the same mistake as St. Louis and tear down an irreplaceable landmark. Here is why… St. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Common Sense?

Rarely have I been so subtly and yet blatantly astonished by a “common sense” column. The Feb. 2-9 authored by the Egg Harbor administrator scored a goal! I note that the author lists his previous residences were Michigan and Florida. He also expressed in an article in the Peninsula Pulse, that he would work to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Achievements of Paul Ryan

I felt it important to note some of the many achievements of Paul Ryan on behalf of the citizens of Wisconsin and the U.S. First, his efforts to destroy the Affordable Care Act and cause millions to be without health insurance coverage is noteworthy and should be remembered. Second, his embrace of the tax bill […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Dismantling and Disposition of Our Historical Granary

Will the pieces of the granary be sold to the highest bidder? And will the pieces be sold separately or will priority be given to keeping the granary whole? So that it can be reassembled and retain as much of its historical value as possible? My personal feeling is that our city fathers (staff and […]

  • Letter to the Editor: No Alternatives to Food

Regarding your note “Western Wisconsin Led Nation in Farm Bankruptcies,” it’s a shame that President Trump chose “big, beautiful coal” as his poster child for MAGA when everyone knows that it was farmers that made America great in the first place. There are many alternatives to coal but no alternatives to food. If you accept […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Sharing of Information

Regarding the Jan. 19 article “Wolf Hearing Heats Up,” it’s a strange world we live in where the federal government is threatening states that do not cooperate with ICE but our state government is considering a bill that would prohibit state agencies from sharing information with federal agencies related to wolf hunting. One defender of […]

  • Letter to the Editor: An Ethical Resolution

As I have written in these pages, I am opposed to “shutting down the government” because our government is made up of real persons (not abstractions) who need a steady source of income in return for their legitimate work. But when there seems to be no other way to get the ruling party of our […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Kudos to Gibraltar Businessman

In the Jan. 19 edition of the Peninsula Pulse was a story in the Business section about Don and Lynn Grasse and their desire to start a winery near Ellison Bay. The story was positive and uplifting, here are folks that want to add to the richness and beauty of our county. My wife Amy […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thanks for Adding to Dialogue

Thank you to George Krall and Patrick Cerra in the Jan. 19 letters, stating so well what most Americans feel on a daily basis as we see our country continue to descend into unfair, unwise policy changes and coarse twitters. We must end the bigoted biases, the vast income inequality and political corruption which have […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Listening to Everyone

Yesterday I read that Laurel Hauser, Sturgeon Bay City Council Alderwoman, is sponsoring Listening Sessions and wants especially to talk “with people who may feel differently than I do…” and “I’d like to hear varied perspectives.” I believe this is what is desperately needed in our country today!   If only this perspective would be […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Three-dimensional, Philosophical Semiotics

Mr. President, As one of your “Deplorables,” out here in “Real America,” fighting to defend your honor and integrity against all the “Fake Americans” who only want to criticize you for sometimes stretching the truth just a teensy bit, I thought maybe I could offer a worthwhile observation that would help all Americans understand your […]

  • Letter to the Editor: More Wealth to the Rich

I am writing this in response to Mr. Schimmer’s letter on “Compensation for Pain and Suffering.” He believes that we should be thankful for the “wealth” generated by the current administration. I take issue with his statement of the “vast majority of us who have money in a pension, IRA, 401(K), individual stocks and mutual […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Wedding Venue?

I found it interesting that on page 5 of the Jan. 12-19 edition there is an article stating that Sevastopol residents were concerned that the proposed winery might be used as a wedding venue. Even though the developer claimed not to want to do that, the board eliminated a condition that may have allowed for […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Kohler-Andrae Land Deal

Should Wisconsin State Park property be made available to private businesses for their private interests and profits? That surely goes against the purpose of land the public owns for the public good! Yet our Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has been working with the Kohler Company to enable that entity to expand a golf […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Nonsensical Ban

I read “Town of Gibraltar Bans Food Trucks” and was disturbed by the actions and implications in the story. Some of the best and reasonably priced food I have eaten has been from food trucks. The purpose of government is not to discourage capitalism, restrict free trade or competition by excessive regulation. This “banning” appears […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Ugly Americans

After hearing our President call the countries of Haiti and Africa, “s***holes,” a sadness overcame me. My mind produced other words the President said about other people and other countries, like people from Haiti all have AIDS, etc. and the sadness deepened. The President speaks for the United States across the world and his bully […]

  • Letter to the Editor: We Can Survive

I am troubled by the tone of the letters I’ve been reading in the Pulse. It appears that there is a considerable amount of angst due to the fact that Donald Trump was elected president. President Trump. Yes, he’s been making changes from the Obama administration. How can he do this? Because President Obama used […]

  • Letter to the Editor: What Have We Become?

We were once a proud nation; a nation that countries of the world looked to for leadership and support in times of crisis. We were a country that attracted our grandparents because of the rights, the freedom and opportunities we offered. Without using their race, religion, nationality or other conditions as qualifiers we simply helped […]
