  • Letter to the Editor: Peninsula Preschool is Rare, Wonderful Gift

As some of you know, I have, with tears of gratitude, retired from my teaching job at Peninsula Preschool. I have been at the preschool for several decades and I can honestly say I have loved every minute of my time teaching there! I believe Peninsula Preschool is a rare and wonderful gift to our […]

  • Letter to the Editor: We Need Comprehensive, Fair Health Care Solution

The secretive, proposed GOP health care bill is shameful for America. It would leave about 50 million citizens without decent coverage and mean exorbitant premiums or copays for hundreds of others, many who through no fault of their own need surgery or accessible medical attention. When many smaller and less fortunate countries have shown the […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Bullies Beget Bullies

In light of the events of the past week, one has to wonder what is happening to us. What is apparent, with the election of Mr. Trump, bullies feel they have carte blanche because he has brought out the worst in us. With bounty hunters shooting it out and killing each other in Texas; a […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Get Big Money Out of Politics

Our president’s ignorant tweet about the London bombing made me doubly curious about how he got elected, since I think that most Americans are better than this. I finally found a credible answer in a review by Sue Halpern of two new books on the role of the internet in our election (New York Review […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Tax Plan Troubles

USA Today reported on May 19 that the “powerful political network overseen by conservative billionaire Charles Koch is launching a multimillion-dollar campaign to drive Trump’s tax plan through Congress.” According to the article, the group wants to pass a tax overhaul this year in advance of the mid-term elections in case the Republicans lose control […]

  • Letter to the Editor: First Step Toward Resolution?

Given that the City of Sturgeon Bay and Friends of Sturgeon Bay Public Waterfront hold different thoughts regarding the west side development and placement of a hotel, it seems their joint next step, the Madison College Interest Based Problem Solving process, scheduled for June 12, is an appropriate, enlightened approach. In the process, I hope […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Make America Weak & Sick

Trump’s policy on global climate change is that it is a hoax. Tell that to all the people who have suffered from terrible flooding and more severe storms in many parts of the country, a sign of climate change and warming global temperatures. Just like our Wisconsin governor, who does not believe in science, Trump […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Happy Tweets 2 U

There is much anticipation regarding the upcoming testimony of Mr. Comey. Will there be enough evidence to start impeachment proceedings? For the heck of it, let’s say there is. What would be a fair sentence? House arrest at Mar-A-Lago, re-open his failed casino in Atlantic City, Commencement speech at Trump U, or all of the […]

  • Letter to the Editor: HELP Comments on Proposed ‘Permitless’ Carry Bill

Today a piece of legislation regarding firearms is receiving a public hearing in the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety. Senate Bill 169, sometimes known as the ‘permitless’ carry bill. If passed, this bill would wipe out our current, reasonable regulations of public gun carrying. Specifically, this dangerous bill would: Eliminate the current requirement […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Kudos to Senator Baldwin

Concerned and active citizens often call or write their representatives when they disagree with what’s going on in Washington. However, it is also important to give positive reinforcement when our representatives have earned it. Senator Tammy Baldwin has recently earned some positive reinforcement for several actions. Firstly, she and a group of her senatorial colleagues wrote a […]

  • Letter to the Editor: A Note from the Cowboy Church of Door County

Recently there was a comment by ISIS about the killing of the Cross worshippers in Manchester, UK. Let’s get this straight:  WE DO NOT WORSHIP THE CROSS. Nothing is further from the truth. Note the Cowboy Church cross is empty; our faith is based upon on the sacrifice and resurrection  that the cross represents. Our anchor Bible verse […]

  • Letter to the Editor: How Many More Cows, DNR?

Finally, the Department of Natural Resources has recognized that the groundwater under Kewaunee County is contaminated and owners of private wells need relief. Owners of contaminated wells will now be provided with bottled water. It has taken far too long for the department to realize the connection between excessive manure and contaminated groundwater. But now […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Heading in the Wrong Direction

Why did some Americans hire (vote for) a man to run one of the most important and difficult jobs in the world when he is totally disqualified, doesn’t know anything about government or the constitution or the rule of law, and is a pathological liar? It is time to begin impeachment procedures against Donald Trump. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: EYC Sailors Say Thanks

A special thank you to the following merchants, businesses, restaurants and artists who have generously made in-kind donations to support the Ephraim Yacht Club’s Aaron R. Moore Sailing Scholarship Fund. The fund was established five years ago to benefit the youth of Door County who otherwise could not afford to participate in the sailing lessons […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Just a Suggestion

Mr. President: As I have mentioned before, I am one of your biggest supporters and getting huger every day that you are in office making America great again. I know you are particularly busy these days after playing through your first 100 days in office. It must be exhausting, sir, deflecting mounting allegations that your […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Democracy Dies in Darkness

If infrequent truthfulness by our elected leaders bothers you. If you believe that there are no such things as “alternative facts.” If you long for the days when we could believe the words coming out of the White House, then I invite you to join others who feel the same way, on June 3 at […]

  • Letter to the Editor: See Velvet Gentlemen

On Thursday, May 18, I was present at Third Avenue Playhouse for opening night of Velvet Gentleman, the creation, from conception to execution, of James Valcq. After the show, we made our way slowly to the lobby to look in awe at James, who only moments prior had held us in his thrall, speaking in […]

  • Letter to the Editor: A Modern Sad Tale

Every morning brings more news about the assault of the common man and rewards for corporations and the wealthy; the taking away of our health care, the giving away of our environment and even being able to kill sleeping animals’ are just a few assaults. The President and Secretary of State meeting with Russian officials […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Insurance?!

“Practice?! We talkin’ ‘bout practice?!” Ah, the immortal indignation of Allen Iverson. Allow me to retort. Insurance?! We talkin’ ‘bout insurance?! Every conversation I have about healthcare insurance starts with “insurance is a scam” (yes, we agree) and quickly devolves to “but, the government must mandate we all buy insurance” (no, no, no). I invite […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Lost Trust in Gallagher

If I could speak face to face with our Wisconsin District 8 Representative to the U.S. Congress, Mike Gallagher, I would ask him to explain his vote in favor of the health care “robbery” bill recently passed by the House of Representatives. When the first, failed bill was withdrawn before a vote, I and many […]
