  • Letter to the Editor: Family Planning Funding is Needed

Defunding Planned Parenthood and cutting back on worldwide family planning funding is a disastrous decision for the future of the world. I was appalled by what I read in Thomas Friedman’s book Thank You for Being Late. World population is projected to increase by 2.4 billion people to 9.7 billion by 2050. The populations of […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Letter to President Trump

Mr. President, As I have stated previously, I am a huge supporter. Yuugge! One of the bigliest in my neighborhood. Every morning I wake up knowing we are one step closer to being “great again” because of your brilliant leadership and incredible showmanship. Your administration is, like, the best reality TV show ever, stocked with […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Do Not Abandon Environmental Protections

It is shocking to think that the Environmental Protection Agency could be destroyed by being defunded. Throughout our country, every day, numerous activities for the wellbeing of us all are taking place under the umbrella of the EPA. A recent example hits close to home – the Chicago Tribune story (April 16) of a chromium […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Earth Day 2017

This year will go down in history as “the year the earth started to cry.” We use to think that our elected officials have our best interests at heart and are working for us; not any more. We now have a government that works for corporate America. The laws that are being passed both at […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Deny Home, Property Insurance for Climate Change Deniers

There is climate change despite what our well-funded government leaders say. Climate change is costing every one of us in some way. Whether it is the strong winds that blow down trees and take off roofs, multi-vehicle accidents on our roads caused by crazy weather, hail damage to crops, roofs and cars, 60 degree temperatures […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Dark and Light

Today, like many others in our country, I find myself deeply troubled by the mean-spirited, selfish, greedy, disingenuous, paranoid, arrogant, dishonest and angry state of mind that pervades our country. I see this anger as the outward manifestation of inner fear. I see greed and selfishness as an outward manifestation of an inner loneliness bred […]

  • Letter to the Editor: A Great March for A Great Lake

The pending federal budget will ultimately be a statement of national values. Right now, we have both the responsibility and an opportunity to have a say in the Congressional budget process and final product. I believe that there are potentially dangerous consequences for Door County residents and guests in the budget, as currently proposed. We […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Wisconsin Redistricting

A major goal of the League of Women Voters of Door County is to promote an open government, one that is representative, accountable, responsive and capable of making decisions. The existing redistricting process in Wisconsin does not promote this type of system and must be changed. Partisan redistricting, also known as gerrymandering, has created a […]

  • Letter to the Editor: The People Have Spoken…or Have They?

Last Tuesday, eligible citizens in the Southern Door County School District had the opportunity to vote whether to continue the proud tradition of providing their children with an outstanding public education; 50.56 percent of the citizens voted NO and 49.44 percent voted YES. The people have spoken. Or have they? The referendum to maintain district […]

  • Letter to the Editor: ‘I Inherited A Mess’

Day after day President Trump utters the words “I inherited a mess.” He did so again in his April 5th press conference with the King of Jordan. Let’s look at the facts. When Obama took office the country was losing a half million jobs a month. When Obama took office the stock market was cratering […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thank You!

We want to thank all of you for the amazing generosity, thoughtfulness, prayers and support we experienced during the ordeal of Kenan’s last journey through life. Even though he could no longer speak, we know Kenan understood and appreciated all of your loving gestures and words of comfort. Bless you all. The Pat Bunda family, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Johnson Doesn’t Represent Constituents

I recently listened in to a Ron Johnson “Tele Town Hall.” One of the callers asked Mr. Johnson if he takes into consideration, when voting, the feedback he gets from constituents. He danced around the answer a bit, but in the end basically said that we elected him and we elected Mr. Trump, and so […]

  • Letter to the Editor: The Road to Chaos

George Santayana once said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” In the 18th century, deference to the French king had declined. His word was no longer final. The people were desperate for food and the money to buy it. Angry women marched on Versailles – the king’s palace, a refuge […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Clean Energy Is Where Jobs Are

“Bipartisan Commitment Needed for Clean Environment” (March 24) gets it right. The EPA is vital to keeping our air, land and water clean, but there’s a faster and better way to make emissions cuts that can prevent “catastrophic” global warming (IPCC) and it can serve as a model to other countries showing how they can […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Leading the Race to the Bottom

To Walker and Trump all environmental regulations are “burdensome,” as if they were put in place just to be a hindrance to good Americans trying to make a living. In reality those regulations were passed because there was a need for them. One of the few things that Trump admires about China is how they […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Fresh Water: Endless or Endangered?

Question: What do the years 2014, 2015 and 2016 have in common? Answer: They were each, successively, the hottest years ever recorded on earth. Is that trend just a quirk of nature? No. Are those records a call to action? Yes. Climate change is a reality for our planet and for Wisconsin. Natural and human […]

  • Letter to the Editor: What’ll Be Next?

Early in the morning of March 4th President Trump sent out a string of tweets alleging that former President Obama ordered the wiretapping of Trump Tower in order to undermine his campaign. Immediately there began talk of a congressional investigation to determine if there was evidence to support Trump’s claim. Some tried to soften the […]

  • Letter to the Editor: I Wish I Could Vote for Beller

My name is Claudia Scimeca and I am a resident of Egg Harbor. I am writing this letter to tell you why you should vote for Martha Scully Beller on April 4th for the District 3 Council Person of Sturgeon Bay. You might ask yourself why someone from Egg Harbor would be writing an endorsement letter for […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Vote for Write-In Candidate Allmann

To my fellow District 5 residents in Sturgeon Bay: we have a wonderful write-in candidate to vote for in the April 4 election – Barb Allmann. Barb was a former member of the council, in a different district, until she moved to the 5th District, so she is familiar with how the council works, and […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Health Care and Wealth

What is more important: a healthy baby in a single mom’s household or another new luxury car? Treating a child with diabetes or a golf trip to Scotland? Affordable medications for grandma and grandpa or a wine and dine tour through the French countryside? These are the policy questions raised by the Republican American Health […]
