  • Letter to the Editor: A Christmas Message

With the start of the coming year, one that is filled with uncertainty on where our country is headed, we should hold to these truths. Hate and distrust is a sign of weakness not strength. Hopefully, we can work together so that truth and justice for all will prevail. Together we will fight for […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Do Over, Anyone?

It appears the President-elect’s definition of draining the swamp, is turning it into a sinkhole. I’m not going to list all his cabinet appointments, it’s simply too depressing. When the reports are that the sharpest of the lot is nicknamed “Mad Dog” that pretty much sums things up. I do think his choice for secretary […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Your Responsibility as a Landowner

Recently we observed a situation where a parcel of land is owned by an out-of-area family that rents out the land to a community farm operator. There is no problem with that arrangement as it is in practice throughout the farming area, however, the temptation often arises to bend the regulations regarding animal (and other) […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Rogue Does So Much More Than Entertain

As I sat in church last Sunday, thankful for my wife, family and the end of a recent back surgery, I listened to the priest give his homily. He spoke of this time of year as the season of giving. He told of how the wise men gave gifts to the newborn Jesus and that […]

  • Letter to the Editor: All Lives Matter

Let me preface this article by saying that I am a firm believer in protecting human life from conception to natural death. During one of his political speeches Trump vividly describes an abortion procedure. For many voters the single deciding issue in their voting for a person who was called unqualified by his own party […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Kindness and Honesty of Strangers

Every year we come to Sturgeon Bay to do our Black Friday shopping. This year was no exception. However, what could have been a bad experience turned into a very neat experience thanks to some very special clerks at Younkers. Whenever we travel, I always put some spending money in a bank envelope to keep […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Here’s to a Happy New Year

We may still be dealing with an election that must surely be the longest running in the history of this United States, and the weatherman is predicting a colder than usual winter with an extra measure of snow, but here’s some good news that should add some additional sparkle to our Holiday Season. The […]

  • Letter to the Editor: What Does “Live United” Really Mean?

For the longest time I did not really give the United Way much thought because I did not really understand what they did. They did not have a building to visit or any real tangible thing to touch. But I kept hearing about the impact being made in our community by this organization so I […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Pioneer Pride

Next June it will be 42 years since I graduated from Sevastopol High School. For 12 years before that day, the administration and faculty at Sevastopol instructed and guided me on a path which prepared me for the post-secondary educational and career opportunities I have pursued since. I have always been extremely grateful for that […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thanks for Supporting Our Veterans

The members of the Door County Veterans Service Council would like to thank everyone that helped with the annual Door County Veterans Day ceremony at Gibraltar High School – including Secretary Scocos and Colonel Lawrie for speaking, Charlie Eckhardt for sounding taps, and the band and choir for all of the great patriotic music (directors […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Nightmarish Visions from the “Alt-Right”

I heard a disturbing comment by a nice-sounding man from the “Alt-right” on public radio this week to the effect that he is simply urging “whites” to take care of our own “family” of white people before others. I have also read that members of this movement want to rid the U.S. of all […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thankful for Our Nonprofit Human Service Organizations

On Nov. 15, the 2016-17 Leadership Door County class spent the day learning about human services in Door County. The 12 participants heard from and met with representatives of more than a dozen organizations and toured five facilities. There is much need in Door County – more than most people realize – but there are […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Biogas Plant in Kewaunee County?

On Nov. 17, Governor Walker’s appearance and declaration to help Kewaunee County came again in the form of the big industry push for taxpayer monies for both digesters and a biogas plant for our community. While manure flows most recently from a Luxemburg tap, these technologies are heralded as the silver bullet for Kewaunee, one […]

  • Letter to the Editor: More than 350 People Served at Community Thanksgiving Dinner

The 37th annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner held at the Sturgeon Bay United Methodist Church was an amazing success feeding more than 350 individuals this year, which was a new record! More than 150 individuals dined at church while another 206 home deliveries and carryout meals were provided. People who were alone, or who had no […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Redevelopment Means More Publicly Owned Land, Not Less

Recently a letter written by Dan Collins dated Oct. 25, 2016, on behalf of the Friends of the Sturgeon Bay Public Waterfront was delivered and printed by several media outlets in Door County. Mr. Collins’ letter is very misleading and outright erroneous. The letter relates to the issue to the proposed hotel development on Sturgeon […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thank You

Sincere thanks to all who helped support our campaign for the First Assembly seat. Whether you put a yard sign up, found room for a larger sign, canvassed, opened your home for meetings, or helped in the numerous other ways many of you did – Thank you! Thank you to all who voted for me. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Working on Unity

Friends, In the wake of this divisive election, all of us in Door County face a great test of our stated principles. We on the left have long claimed our politics to be that of compassion for the other. And many of you on the right have claimed that your votes for Trump were not […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Differing Opinions

Although Wisconsin turned red, I note with concern that you are “seeing red” after the recent election while the majority of Door County voters see a brighter future after “feeling blue” for eight years. It’s interesting that four and eight years ago those who lost did not have temper tantrums leading to riotous protests, but […]

  • Letter to the Editor: This 50 Percent Must Stand Up

Today is an incredibly sad day for the United States. A man who is clearly a misogynist has won the presidency. A man who openly judges women based on looks, and makes no apologies for it. A man who demeans women. A man who fondles and attempts to kiss women, using his power to create […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thanks to ‘Fab 4’ for Bayside Anniversary Dinners

Each year we travel to Door County to celebrate not only the fall color but to honor our anniversary. Our neighbors, the Viks, have been traveling with us on our annual trek for about 10 years. On this recent visit in 2016 we were in Fish Creek and stopped at the Bayside Tavern for a […]
