  • Letter to the Editor: A Sheriff for Kitchens

I have had the honor of serving my community for better part of my adult life. I have worked alongside many appointed and elected officials in various capacities and numerous initiatives. Every now and then a special person enters into my life and brings a new level of enthusiasm and professionalism in their style […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Be Aware of Political Ads

Since we are all being bombarded with political ads, I urge everyone to take a closer look at the contents of these well-financed commercials. Keep in mind that the majority of the spots are being funded by the wealthiest of the wealthy. The current spot, being run by the Gallagher campaign, is truly misleading. It […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Support for Kitchens Re-election

As a teacher and parent of three school-age children, I wholeheartedly support the re-election of Joel Kitchens. It is no secret that Wisconsin Republicans have not always been viewed in the most positive light in regard to public education policy over the last few years. Joel is a huge exception. He is a pragmatist who […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Private Rallies Are Death of Republican Party

It may be too early to predict the death of the Republican Party, but it is not too early to understand the role of the private rally in its current difficulties. I have no idea how many politicians hold private rallies, perhaps many. But I doubt that many successful politicians have taken the private […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Specific Solutions to Environmental Problems

In September I attended a Climate Change Coalition of Door County (CCCDC) presentation given by Tyler Huebner, executive director of RENEW Wisconsin, a renewable energy advocacy focused on advancing wind, solar, bioenergy, and smart energy usage. I have become accustomed to witnessing an impressive assortment of environmental experts in the CCCDC speaker lineup, but it […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Dr. Strangelove and Donald Trump

I recently watched Dr. Strangelove by Stanley Kubrick for the umpteenth time. If you are not familiar, it’s a political satire black comedy about nuclear war between the USA and USSR. There are seven major characters. In a surreal way, they have similar characteristics to those of Donald Trump, and the cast of characters […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Saving Door County From Itself

As we see one Door County icon after another fall to the ax of yet another naïve town, county, or DNR board or committee listening to engineering firms trolling for lucrative municipal projects, we should remember what makes Door County special. It isn’t a widened street that removes every mature tree, a redesigned traffic pattern, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Enough About Trump

Enough about Trump; he has dug his own grave. The question is how did he get the nomination? I believe his rise started when our country’s festering latent racism emerged with Obama’s election. It’s not just a coincidence that the “birther” issue started with the first black president. Like-minded politicians jumped on the obstructionist bandwagon […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Pay Attention to Green Site Rules

The Baileys Harbor Green Site was opened several years ago to provide a location for Baileys Harbor residents to have a place to dispose of compostable yard waste, and as of this past summer, the town expanded the Green Site to have a permanent recycling site and scrap metal collection. All areas at the Green […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Perpetual Politician

It has to be gross arrogance to run for political office with yard signs that say RUSS in big letters and a much smaller picture of Wisconsin as the entire content. Yes, everybody knows that it’s Russell Feingold running again. This man has never had a real job, he’s been in office or running […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Nelson’s Will Be Sorely Missed

We are third-generation owners and I have been the caretaker of our family cabin for the last 35 years of the 50-plus years our family has been the owner. It goes without saying they [Nelson Shopping Center] will be sorely missed as a quick but permanent solution to problems that arise owning a property originally […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Rep. Joel Kitchens Represents Our Interests

As a former Sturgeon Bay City Administrator, I enthusiastically support the re-election of Representative Joel Kitchens. During my many years of municipal management I had the opportunity to work with numerous elected officials. Doing so was often a very frustrating task. Fortunately, we in Door and Kewaunee County have a proactive, energetic and supportive representative […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Sad News

I cannot begin to tell you how sad the news of the closing of Nelson’s Baileys Harbor Shopping Center made me feel. I have been a customer since I was a child, and I knew that I could find what I needed in this place, with its creaky floors and old-time warmth. It would […]

  • Letter to the Editor: We’re Still Here!

Jim and I want our friends and loyal customers to know that even though we are closing our Baileys Harbor store, we will still be open in our Fish Creek shop, which was our original location. So please come and visit us there. And we just may pop up in another location in the near future. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Congratulations to the Pulse

I have been enjoying the Pulse for the past six years. We come up to Door County almost every weekend during the summer and fall. Your paper is always fun to read and I cannot wait to get my copy on Friday morning. You cover so many items related to history, local happenings, perspectives, community, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thanks for Supporting Go Dogs for Go Bo

The Animal Clinic of Sturgeon Bay recently held our Go Dogs for Go Bo fundraiser. We are blessed to live in Door County and wanted to give back to the community and to a local organization that helps so many Door County families. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the many individuals, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Preserve the Scenic Shoreline

Anyone boating on the bay this summer has noticed an unsettling trend, the trophy homes along the shoreline and at the top of the bluff, with their outsize footprints and suburban style landscaping, are starting to change the character of the Door County shoreline. Our scenic shoreline that was green with cedars and dotted with […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Utesch for Assembly

I had not met Lynn Utesch until last week when my husband and I sponsored a “meet and greet” event at our home for a dozen friends from northern Door. We are very impressed with this candidate, and I urge you to become more familiar with his qualifications and positions. Mr. Utesch is known for […]

  • Letter to the Editor: German-Polish Connection

Reading your article about Hedwig Peil [“Hedwig Peil: The ‘Mail-Order Bride’ Who Took Door County by Storm” by Patty Williamson, volume 22, issue 38] reminded me of some strong-willed and intelligent Polish women I have known. Hedwig is a Germanic version of Jadwiga, who was queen of Poland in the 1400s, and who was canonized […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Downsize Your Down

Misrepresentation in labeling rears its ugly head again. As cooler weather approaches, we began thinking about warm coats and jackets and soft, snuggly quilts and duvets. Nothing says warmth better than goose down. But at what cost to the animals that suffer, that the down is there for the stuffing? Eighty percent of the world’s […]
