Hailed as the “Paganini of the Steelpan,” Birch Creek faculty member and steelpan artist-in-residence, Liam Teague, will be performing in concerts at Birch Creek from July 14 – 17. The 2010 season will mark Teague’s 15th season at Birch Creek.

Teague currently serves as the Head of Steelpan Studies and is an Assistant Professor of Music at Northern Illinois University. Along with Clifford Alexis, he is co-director of the Northern Illinois University Steelband. He has distinguished himself as the recipient of many awards in his homeland of Trinidad and Tobago for his ability with the steelpan, violin and recorder. He is also the co-winner of the National Steelband Festival Solo Championship of Trinidad and Tobago.

Under the baton of Dr. Paul Freeman, Teague, with the Chicago Sinfonietta, gave the world premiere of Illinois composer Jan Bach’s Concerto for Steelpan and Orchestra at the Orchestra Hall in Chicago. Subsequent appearances with the Chicago Sinfonietta include his 2001 performance at Kennedy Center.

Teague’s commitment to demonstrating the great musical possibilities of the Steelpan has taken him to Europe, Asia, North and Central America, Australia, and the Caribbean.

A strong advocate for original Steelpan compositions, Teague has commissioned a number of significant composers to write for the instrument. His own compositions include “A Visit To Hell,” “Impressions,” “Raindrops,” “Chant,” and “Dougla.”
