The Hardy Gallery, in collaboration with Friends of Gibraltar (FOG), will present a sampling of artwork made by Gibraltar High School students in the 2011-12 Exposure to Creativity (ETC) Program at the Link Gallery in Fish Creek. The exhibit is scheduled for display until May 28.

The ETC workshops pair students with experienced local artists for specialized hands-on learning. A handmade paperwork workshop, taught by Algoma artist Kirsten Christianson, was among the 29 ETC workshops offered to students. A group of six students, accompanied by science teacher Craig Carriere, learned how to embed pressed and dried leaves and plants into handmade sheets of paper.

Additionally, they experimented with colored pulps, stenciling onto the paper, and working with willow. They made willow hoops to serve as frames for the paper and natural materials. “It was so rewarding to help [the students] make some beautiful works of art,” said Christianson.

The Center for Handmade Paper at Woodwalk Gallery in Egg Harbor will provide additional opportunities for both students and the general public to pursue their interest in this medium.
