“Listen to the Birds” at Bjِrklunden

From June 15 – 20, Lawrence University’s Bjِrklunden is offering a commuter-only seminar, “Listen to the Birds” with Don Quintenz.

Birds are constantly telling us many things if we know how to listen. Learn the “language of the birds,” which for many Native Americans is the most telling of all nature’s “voices,” at this seminar. Participants will explore different wildlife communities daily in search of the hundreds of species that make Door County home. Students will learn field identification skills, bird sounds using a variety of sound tools, techniques for understanding the complex behaviors of birds, and fascinating discoveries that science has made about birds. Participants must be able to walk on unpaved trails for distances of two miles during a period of 2 ½ hours.

Quintenz, director of education and director of land management at Schlitz Audubon Center in Milwaukee, has been teaching environmental education since 1967. He previously worked with the Milwaukee Public Schools as its environmental specialist and before that was with the Wisconsin Humane Society as an environmental educator.

Seminar classes meet weekday mornings and some evenings at Bjِrklunden’s lodge, just south of Baileys Harbor. Each seminar includes meals prepared by Bjِrklunden’s resident chef.
