Local Booksellers Team Up to Form New Publishing Venture

Part-time Sister Bay resident Charlie Calkins, who does business as The Badger Bibliophile, and Peter Sloma, owner of The Peninsula Bookman in Fish Creek, have joined forces to form the new venture Peninsula Partners Publishing, LLC.

Peninsula Partners Publishing intends to focus on the republication of historic imprints, beginning with a catalog of vintage map reproductions from Door County, Wisconsin, and the Upper Midwest. The new company’s first project, a reprint of the map of Door County from the 1878 Wisconsin State Atlas, became available at the end of July. Several more fine art quality lithographic map reprints from the area will be released over the next few months.

In explaining the selection of the individual maps, Calkins said, “while we are occasionally able to make original antique copies of these maps available to collectors, they are of course, very scarce and limited in number. A high quality reproduction seemed an obvious way to make them more widely available to all those who might be interested in owning these historic images.”

On the future of the venture Sloma added, “though our first series of publications will be historic map reprints, we see this project as an opportunity to also bring a variety of books and other printed works of historic value back to wide and easy availability.”

At this time, the 1878 map of Door County is available at The Peninsula Bookman in Fish Creek, and the booths operated by The Badger Bibliophile in the Olde Orchard Antique Mall and the Peninsula Antique Center. Peninsula Partners Publishing is also interested in establishing wholesale relationships with other galleries and shops throughout the area.
