Local Boy Scouts Earn Highest Honor

Reaching the rank of Eagle Scout is a Boy Scout’s way of reaching for the stars. Four members of Boy Scout Troup 1120 reached their goal and were recognized for their achievements in their Eagle projects, as well as their overall achievements in Boy Scouts and life, on Sunday March 1, 2008 at the Baileys Harbor Town Hall.

Three seniors and one junior, all students at Gibraltar High School in Fish Creek, were honored at the ceremony. The seniors were Nick Weborg, Ian Anschutz, and Mike Stubenvoll, and Harrison Hilgers was the junior that rounded out the group of hardworking boys.

Nationally, only about four percent of Boy Scouts become Eagle Scouts. In order to reach the rank of Eagle Scout, there are several requirements that the boys must meet and all must be completed before the scouts eighteenth birthday. Each scout must earn at least 21 merit badges, receive letters of recommendation, and undergo interviews with Scouting representatives. They must also complete an individual Eagle Scout project.

Each of the four scouts completed their projects with the help of friends, family, and fellow Boy Scouts. Weborg constructed Bluebird Boxes, created a brochure, and monitored the effects of the boxes at the nature conservancy. For Anschutz’ project, he also constructed boxes but Wood Duck Boxes rather than Bluebird. His project also included a brochure and monitoring of the Wood Ducks. Stubenvoll cleaned up the trails in the Ephraim Wildlife Preserve and built benches. Hilgers built flood buckets to send to Louisiana to help after hurricane Katrina.

The four boys worked hard to attain their individual goals as Boy Scouts and will continue to strive towards helping the world become a better place. These four boys deserve our gratitude and support as they continue their journeys through life.
