Local Students Fill Three Seats at Birch Creek

Birch Creek Music Performance Center is hosting three local Door County students this season during their Symphony, Jazz I, and Jazz II sessions.

Jonathan Bass, piano, returns this year from Washington Island as a Symphony student and will also attend Jazz II for the first time. Bass was the first runner-up in 2014 for the Outstanding Percussion/Piano/Harp Student Award, and was a 2015 recipient of Burton Scholarships for both Symphony and Jazz. Bass is 14 years old, and will be a high school freshman at Washington Island this fall.

Another returning student, Ty Zawojski from Sevastopol, will join Birch Creek’s Jazz I Session as a trombone player. Zawojski has been a member of the St. Norbert’s Honors Band, and is heavily influenced by classic rock, citing AC/DC, Metallica, and similar artists as his favorites.

Later in the season, Maddy Parenteau will attend the Jazz II Session as a trumpet player. Parenteau is from Sturgeon Bay, and this will be her first year with Birch Creek. She was nominated for and won the Exemplary Soloist Award at Wisconsin State Solo & Ensemble Festival in May for her performance of Carnival of Venice. She is also a member of Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Session dates are: Symphony – July 9 – 11; Jazz I: July 15 – 18 and July 22 – 25; and Jazz II – Aug. 1 & 5 – 8. For tickets, visit birchcreek.org or call 920.868.3763.
