The Door Peninsula is alive with the sights and sounds of spring. While you wait for the temperatures to catch up, why not fill your weekend with celebrations of art, orchids, music, Arbor Day and the month of May? We’ve got all of that and more in our top picks for the weekend ahead.
Friday, April 29
Celebrating the Artist
After months of renovating one of Sturgeon Bay’s oldest downtown buildings into a new art space, Door County artist Margaret Lockwood will open the doors to her new gallery for a reception on Friday afternoon. Along with her ethereal abstract paintings will be outdoor sculptures, woven metal jewelry and ceramics from a few other Door County artists. 3 pm.
Train for Orchid Propagation
Are you interested in participating in one of The Ridges’ most exciting projects yet? Sign up for a field work training session for the Orchid Propagation Project on Friday afternoon. 1 – 4 pm.
Saturday, April 30
Earth Week Culmination
Earth Week will end in Door County with more opportunities to do good for Mother Earth. A spring clean up of the grounds at Scandia Village in Sister Bay and a public tree planting at Kangaroo Lake in Baileys Harbor are ways for you to get your hands dirty for a good cause. Another way? A papermaking workshop using old newspapers, cards and construction paper at The Ridges Sanctuary!
Classic Rock and Country
Going to Washington Island for the weekend? Be sure to catch the Modern Day Drifters there at Karly’s Bar and Cellar Restaurant, where they’ll bring their classic rock and country music to islanders’ ears to raise funds for the Washington Island Community Center. 5:30 pm. Tickets required.
Katie Dahl Performs
Another sign of spring in Door County? Folk singer Katie Dahl’s ramped-up performance schedule. Hear her live with Rich Higdon during an evening performance at Base Camp Coffee Bar in Sister Bay. 7 pm.
Sunday, May 1
Celebrate May Day
Head to Crossroads at Big Creek to celebrate one of the most wonderful months on the Door Peninsula with a May Day Ramble through the Ida Bay Preserve. 1 pm.
Enter the Hal Prize
Are you a writer, poet or photographer (or all of the these)? Be sure to submit your creative works to the 2016 Hal Prize. Don’t delay – today is the deadline!
