Lodge Rewards Buy Local Winner

• To help boost the local economy, fm 106.9 the Lodge held their annual “Shop Door County” promotion with 30 local businesses sponsoring registration boxes for the public to come in and sign up for a chance to win $1,069 in cash.

The promotion started Nov. 18 and ended on Dec. 16 at 5 pm. Pam Meyer of Sturgeon Bay was the lucky winner of $1,069 in cash. She signed up at the Clippers Mate in Sturgeon Bay.

• Friends of Peninsula State Park (FPSP) received a $500 grant from State Farm due to the service of retired insurance agent John Plume. Plume worked as a ranger at Peninsula and Newport State Parks in the late ‘60s. Last year, Plume volunteered at Peninsula State Park, clearing brush and litter from the shore. In exchange for service work, State Farm awarded FPSP the grant, which will be used to support park nature education and trail improvements.

• The Northern Door Health & Wellness Cabinet Ministry will begin their winter Community Health Information Program (CHIP) series on Jan. 8. Each program will take place from 4 – 5 pm at the Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church in Ellison Bay. The series, entitled “Recognizing Risky Youth Behaviors,” will be most appropriate for parents, grandparents, and guardians.

The first program, “Disordered Eating and Self-Injury,” will be presented by Jody Jessup NCC, LPC, MS & RD. Jessup offers nutrition and counseling service in Sturgeon Bay and Sister Bay.

The second program will take place Feb. 5. Jessica Holland, BS, will present “Bullying and Date Violence.” Holland is a youth advocate with HELP of Door County.

On March 4, Pastor Bruce Foster, who is pastor of Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church, will present the third program, “Healthy Vs. Unhealthy Sexual Behaviors.”

All the presentations are free and open to the public.

• Door 2 Door Rides expanded its original three-mile radius service area to reach more of Door County. The public shared ride taxi service is affordable and wheelchair accessible and will now accommodate a larger Sturgeon Bay service area, as well as select portions of Northern Door County.

The expanded south service area will include Towns of Nasewaupee, Sturgeon Bay and Sevastopol and the entire City of Sturgeon Bay. The south service will continue to operate seven days per week with additional taxis available during all scheduled hours.

The new north service area will provide localized public transit (shared ride taxi) in the Villages of Ephraim and Sister Bay, the Town of Gibraltar, and the southern portion of the Town of Liberty Grove. The Northern Door service area will initially operate Monday through Friday only.

Door 2 Door Rides is a collaboration between the County of Door and the local non-profit transportation organization Door-Tran. The vans are all wheelchair accessible; and drivers have experience and training to assist passengers with special needs – whether they use a wheelchair, have mobility limitations, or are students needing a ride home from basketball practice.

• United Way of Door County has announced that, as of Dec. 29, the 2011 annual fundraising campaign is at 85.8 percent. A little more than $65,000 is still needed by January 7 to empower residents of Door County in 2012.

A donation to United Way will be invested in nonprofit programs focusing on basic needs, community wellness, health care, and alcohol and other drug abuse.

• The UW-Extension’s Wisline Teleconferences will focus on understanding laws regarding open government and parliamentary procedure. Beginning Jan. 2012, the WisLine Series will also be available on CD or streamed through the Internet after the programs are held.

“Open Meetings Law,” “Public Records Law,” and “Ethics and Conflicts of Interest” are the topics broadcasted on the Thursday afternoons of Jan. 19, 26 and Feb. 2 from 2 – 4 pm. Locally, these Wisline teleconferences are coordinated by the Door County Extension Office and hosted at the Door County Library in Sturgeon Bay.

Pre-registration is required 10 days before the broadcasted teleconference to ensure attendees will receive the materials. The cost is $20 per session to attend the teleconference or $28 per session to receive a CD of the session and printed materials or to connect to the audio program and resource documents via the Internet.

Beginning Feb. 9, Professor Larry Larmer, a popular expert on parliamentary procedure and the author of A Guide to Parliamentary Procedure for Local Government, will conduct a weekly session over 4 weeks. Participants should sign up for the entire course and materials will include a copy of his book. This WisLine teleconference series will be also be available after the broadcasts via CD or Internet.
