LWV Roundtable Addresses Great Lakes Compact

The Great Lakes are one of the natural wonders of the world, the source of 20 percent of the world’s fresh water, and the only freshwater system of its kind. This vital system is threatened by persistent pollution, a growing number of invasive species, and by the withdrawal and export of its waters. Daily headlines speak of water shortages in other regions of the country, not to mention the rest of the world. Yet amazingly there is no plan currently in place to ensure the long-term protection of Great Lakes water. Rectifying this vulnerability is the topic of the April roundtable of the League of Women Voters (LWV) of Door County.

Kim Biederman, Northeast Organizer of the Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters, will present information regarding the Great Lakes Compact, a cooperative agreement between the governors and premiers of the US states and Canadian provinces that share the Great Lakes. Legislation supporting this compact is under consideration in the state legislature. Biederman will explain the background and history of the compact, its current status, and how concerned citizens can influence the process.

The public is invited to join in the roundtable, which will be held on Thursday, April 17 in the “Bored Room” of The Bistro at Liberty Square in Egg Harbor. The meal will be at 5 pm with the program beginning at 6:30 pm.

Please RSVP whether wishing to attend the dinner or just the presentation by calling Susan Kohout (920.743.1527) or emailing ([email protected]) by Saturday, April 12 to reserve a spot.

Participants will order off the menu.
