The James Watrous Gallery, at Madison’s Overture Center for the Arts, 201 State St., will host solo exhibitions by Craig Blietz and S.V. Medaris Nov. 15 – Jan. 26. An artists’ reception will be held Nov. 22, 5-7 pm.
Sentimental pet portraits and pastoral farm scenes are part of the Dairy State’s artistic landscape, and Blietz and Medaris make them fresh through brilliant ability, dramatic scale, sly humor and their love for the animals they depict.
Blietz, of Sister Bay, has been painting cows, sheep and goats for decades, and his canvases get grander in scale and ambition every year. Medaris’s black-and-white prints are as captivating as her work in color, and the audacious scale of her woodcuts makes her technical virtuosity even more impressive. As a farmer in Mt. Horeb, she expresses her personal relationship with each animal through her imagery.
