The latest vessel under construction for the Washington Island Ferry Line, made by Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding, has been nominated for the 2019 Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin contest. Sponsored by Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce and the Johnson Financial Group and now in its fourth year, the contest recognizes products built in our state by all industries.
Work on the Madonna is in progress; delivery is scheduled for May 2020. The vessel will measure 124 feet in length, with a 40-foot beam and 10-foot, eight-inch draft. It will transport as many as 28 vehicles and 150 passengers. Mark Pudlo of SeaCraft Design in Sturgeon Bay is the naval architect. The new ferry will be the fleet’s largest, operating year-round across Death’s Door Passage. Popular-vote voting in the Coolest Thing contest, which determines the top 16, is open at madeinwis.com until Sept. 15.
