Makenna Ash Earns St. Olaf Basketball Award

St. Olaf College seniors Makenna Ash and Ben Westermeyer were honored as the 2019 recipients of the Dave Hauck Award – the top honor for St. Olaf College senior student-athletes – at the St. Olaf 2018-19 Leadership Awards. The award is bestowed annually on one female and one male student-athlete who have demonstrated high levels of academic achievement, community service and athletic excellence.

A member of the women’s basketball and women’s track-and-field teams, Ash finished her career as St. Olaf’s all-time leading rebounder (841) and fourth-leading scorer (1,038). This winter, she earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) honors after averaging a double-double of 12.6 points and 13.6 rebounds per game, ranking eighth in NCAA Division III in rebounds per game and 11th in double-doubles (17). During her career, Ash set the single-game school record for rebounds (24) and tied the single-game scoring record (31) while earning a pair of Honorable Mention All-MIAC accolades.

A Buntrock Scholar, National Merit Scholar and two-time Academic All-MIAC selection, Ash has a cumulative GPA of 3.78 while majoring in Spanish. In January, she participated in the Mayo Innovation Scholars Program and she completed an Allina Clinical Experience Internship in January 2017. Ash has been a member of Alpha Phi Omega for two years, dedicating at least 12 hours of fellowship and 12 hours of service each semester. She was also active with the Fellowship Committee, the Sexual Assault Resource Network (SARN), the Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB), the Piper Center, the Big/Little Program and Three Links Adult Day Care Center.
