Making the Turn

Ferdon Named Big 12 Coach of the Year

Sylvia Ferdon, Baileys Harbor summer resident and ladies head golf coach at Baylor University, was recently named Big 12 Coach of the Year for the 2009 season. This is the second time in her 15-year tenure at Baylor that Ferdon was voted this honor by the league’s coaches. Throughout her career at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, Ferdon has led her team to eight straight regional appearances and the program’s first NCAA Championship berth in 2004. Ferdon, a 1968 graduate of University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, spent several years on the LPGA tour, but many locals remember her as the former golf pro at Peninsula State Park from 1988 – 1995. Ferdon is married to Douglas, a journalism professor at Baylor, and both can often be found at Peninsula State Park golf course in the summertime.

Sevastopol Golf Team Heads To State

With a strong second-place finish at the Division 3 Sectional at Glacier Wood Golf Club in Iola on Monday, June 1, the Sevastopol golf team earned their second consecutive trip to state. It did not come as a huge surprise to the Pioneers head coach, Jeff Campbell.

“They worked really hard, and they deserve it,” stated Campbell.

The two-day state tournament, held Monday and Tuesday, June 7 and 8 at the demanding University Ridge in Madison, proved to be a challenge for the emergent Sevastopol team. Although finishing seventh out of the eight participating Division 3 teams, their coach considered it a success just to make the trip to Madison.

“Just being at state,” stated Campbell, “is a great experience for the kids, and one they’ll never forget.”

Sophomore, Ben Ehlers, was Sevastopol’s top individual golfer, finishing tied for 19th overall, with a total score of 165 (80, 85).

“Just being at state,” stated Campbell “is a great experience for the kids, and one they’ll never forget.”
