Making Waves

Spencer Klika (left) and Michael Scripp (right)

Spencer Klika and Michael Scripp: Our swimmers this week both travel from Green Bay to swim with the Door County YMCA program. It is quite a commitment to travel here three times a week and practice on their own three times in Green Bay. Both boys are multiple state qualifiers in many events, along with swimming on our top relays in each age group.

Michael swims in the 11-12 age group, Spencer just moved up to the 13-14 group. Spencer is a medley swimmer with four very polished strokes. It is a great example of dedication and courage to move to a different team in another city to continue the goals they have both set. Both are national level swimmers who aspire to swim beyond high school.

Notes from Coach Mike McHugh: DCY had a spectacular meet in Milwaukee this weekend, winning the 2014 YMCA Finalist meet! This meet had 19 teams represented, with all of the strong teams in the state attending. We have never placed in the top three before this year. With exceptional swims in every age group, we added approximately 26 new state qualifying times, and added a few new team records. The boys open relays consisting of Ryan Scripp, Jared Klika, Macoy Neinas, and Max McHugh won both the 200 free and 200 medley relays with the fastest times in the state, qualifying for YMCA National Championships in both relays. Max McHugh broke his own state record, swimming the 100 breaststroke in 0:55.51. This is the third fastest time in the history of USA swimming in the 13-14 age group. This is a truly remarkable accomplishment. To put this in perspective, the Wisconsin high school record in the 100 breaststroke is 0:56.43.

Swim Term: Team records – Team statistics, which show the fastest times ever swum by team members. Records usually show the swimmer’s name, their time in each event, and the year the record was set. Records are usually kept for every age group.

Upcoming Meets
