Making Waves: Northern Door YMCA Swimmers

Northern Door YMCA Swimmers

For both the swimmers and parents, it is a serious commitment to live north of Sturgeon Bay and be an active part of the DCY SWIM team.

A small group of swimmers on the team practice at the Northern Door YMCA consisting of Dolphins, Juniors and Junior Elite swimmers. Practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Northern Door YMCA pool is overseen by DCY’s new coach Steve Schendt, who exclusively works with the Northern Door swimmers at the Northern Door site, training both returning swimmers and a promising new group of pre-team “Dolphins.”

An older group of elite swimmers (at the Senior level) travel to Sturgeon Bay YMCA four times a week to swim with the main DCY SWIM team and are trained directly by Coach Mike McHugh.

Paige Thompson, Jesper Johnson, Madison Bunda, Conner Thompson, Kimberly Church, Stella Kersebet and Erin Young display great dedication and perseverance to swim on the DCY SWIM team. The practices in Sturgeon Bay are usually two hours each day, Monday through Thursday, along with some teaching swim lessons before practice.

These swimmers are training extremely hard and most are aspiring to swim at the college level.

DCY SWIM acknowledges their extraordinary patience, fortitude and resolve for this ongoing commitment and for going the “extra mile.”

Congratulations Northern Door swimmers for all that you have accomplished, all the miles you have logged and a great start to the 2015-16 season.

Notes from Coach Mike McHugh: DCY SWIM is now up to 138 swimmers on the 2015-16 pre-team and competitive swim teams combined.

Our last meet was in Oshkosh, with two of our swimmers racing against the Olympic-level swimmers. Julia Kurek and Madison Bunda both swam personal best times during the event.

Overall, the DCY SWIM team preformed with great strength in Oshkosh, posting more than 65 “best times” in 76 events during the three-day meet.

A noteworthy mention from the last meet at Stevens Point is that DCY SWIM had seven High Point winners in several different age groups.

The team travels to Green Bay this coming weekend with 70 swimmers to compete in the Green Bay YMCA Sprint meet at the downtown YMCA.

The upcoming DCY SWIM home meet, DCY Jingle Bell, is right around the corner. This is a great opportunity to see some of the fastest swimmers in the state on their home turf, ages ranging from 7 to 18 years old. All are welcome; it would be great to see you there!
