MAM Opens 35th Annual Salon of Door County High School Art

The public is invited to attend the opening reception for the 35th Annual Salon of School Art on Monday, April 20 from 7 – 8:30 pm at the Miller Art Museum, 107 S. 4th Avenue, Sturgeon Bay. At the event, certificates of participation will be given to each student, and at 7:30 pm, two special achievement cash awards per school will recognize students for their entire performance effort in the art classroom.

The exhibit, which opens on Saturday, April 18, features work from all five Door County high schools, as well as home school students. Artwork from over 100 students is on display, and the work runs the entire spectrum of media, technique, and interpretation to include painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, graphics, jewelry, and ceramics. The exhibit will continue through May 26.

The exhibition, a collaboration between the Miller Art Museum and the schools, has been an annual event beginning in 1975. The Miller has been steadfast in its mission to support and honor students by hosting this exciting exhibit. An eagerly anticipated event, the student show reflects the high standard of inspired teaching in each school.

Door County is especially fortunate to have such strong art programs in each district. Art teachers in Door County are: George Ouimette and Jim Zellner, Southern Door; Nicole Herbst and Sarah Fredrickson, Sturgeon Bay; Tom Hokkanen, Washington Island; Jim Rericha, Sevastopol; and Tom Smith, Gibraltar.

On Thursday, May 14 at 10:30 am, the public is invited to attend a Gallery Talk by Southern Door High School art teacher George Ouimette, who will give a presentation on the art curriculum. Interested volunteers, parents and community members will be intrigued by the depth and breadth of his art program. The museum will open at 10 am for viewing the exhibit and enjoying coffee and treats.

The exhibit is generously supported by the following exhibit sponsors: Miriam Erickson, Carl and Ruth Scholz and The Townsend Foundation.

The Miller Art Museum is open on Mondays 10 am – 8 pm, Tuesday through Saturday 10 am – 5 pm, and is closed Sundays and holidays. Admission is free; donations appreciated. For more information call 920.746.0707, email [email protected] or visit http://www.millerartmuseum.org.
