Manners Matter: Spring on the Mind

Dear Mary Pat,

Help! I’m stuck in between a winter funk and spring fever. Part of me wants to sweep and clean and organize. The other half of me just wants to stay parked on the couch. How do I get motivated and stay motivated?

Dear Seasonally Confused,

I believe we are all in the same boat. With Daylight Saving Time, it kind of feels like spring is here, but we are still buried in snow. Once your body fully adjusts to the time change, that will help immensely.  

We are already halfway through March, so if you suffer from SAD or just have a mild case of the winter blues, your mood is bound to improve soon. The best way I have found to stay on track is to make lists. If you plan out your day ahead of time, you’re more likely to to stay on track and gets things done. Give yourself a list of your daily chores (laundry, dishes, groceries), and then tack on one or two bigger projects each week (clean the garage floor, organize the pantry, straighten the linen closet). You’ll feel so much better in general, and you’ll be less likely to binge on Netflix.

Also, get outside! Even though it’s a little colder than usual, the sun is shining, and there’s nothing as refreshing as the crisp, fresh air to clear out the cobwebs in your mind.
