Manners Matter: White After Labor Day?

Dear Mary Pat,

Can I wear white after Labor Day? I know that some fashion rules have changed, but that one seems pretty strict to me. Please say I can still wear my white jeans for a little while longer.

Dear Wish Summer Would Last Longer,

It used to be a big fashion faux pas to wear white after Labor Day. Things have relaxed a little bit in this regard. You should let the temperature be your guide. If it’s 40 degrees outside in mid-September, then your white jeans might look out of place; the same goes for your sandals. However, if it’s sunny and 80 degrees, your white jeans will look more seasonal. When the temperatures drop for good in the fall, you can easily transition into winter white or cream and not look too summery at all.
