March Schedule at TAP Blends Old Pleasures with New

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Third Avenue Playhouse has aimed for a programming schedule that both salutes audience favorites and incorporates new performers. TAP’s March events seem to have struck just such a balance as perennial favorites Roger Kuhns and Copper Box return early in the month and newcomer Gavin Coyle, an Irish tenor, performs on March 20.

Fans of Roger Kuhns’ dramatic monologues first met “The Red Russian Girl” at Third Avenue Playhouse in 2006, and she holds a special place in the hearts of many of them. Kuhns will reprise this much-loved cultural-political-geological adventure with two performances on Saturday, March 6 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, March 7 at 2 pm. Deftly weaving various storylines in a style reminiscent of the late monologist Spaulding Gray, Kuhns reveals the true Russian heart of a forgotten people.

Copper Box first brought their unique brand of music to TAP’s stage in 2005 and have developed a strong following in northeast Wisconsin. Together, the foursome of Danny Jerabek and wife Michelle, Kevin Junemann and Jason Van Ryzin take a multitude of influences, toss them in a blender and come up with their distinctive sound. While it’s mostly rock, Zydeco and polka, you’ll also hear some blues, country and Tejano and occasional covers including a Pink Floyd polka. Copper Box performs on Saturday, March 13 at 7:30 pm.

Although Gavin Coyle may be a new name to Door County, he is a seasoned performer, well known in the Chicago area. Born in Derry, Northern Ireland, he credits his parents with keeping him and his four sisters from harm and encouraging their interest in music. An accomplished singer and songwriter, Coyle’s musical range covers both pop and folk music as well as traditional music from his homeland. In addition to being an excellent guitarist, he plays several other instruments including the bodhran (an Irish drum) and the flute. Gavin Coyle performs in concert on Saturday, March 20 at 7:30 pm.

Third Avenue, Sturgeon Bay, 920.743.1760. Box office hours are 10 am – 3 pm, Monday through Friday, and one hour prior to performances. Tickets are also available at Dancing Bear, 13 N.
