Twelve iconic figures in the rich maritime history of the Door Peninsula and three local Coast Guardsmen were honored at the annual Mariner Award Dinner held at the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club on Aug. 10.

A joint effort by the Door County Maritime Museum and Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club, the Mariner Award is presented annually to recognize individuals who have had significant, positive and lasting impact on the Door County maritime community. Renowned naval architect and marine engineer Tim Graul, received the 2014 Mariner Award recognizing a living nominee. Posthumous honors went to local maritime legends Robert Noble and Richard Stearn.

Nominees for the Sturgeon Bay area Coast Guard Person of the Year were also honored at the dinner. This award recognizes a local active duty Coast Guardsman who exemplifies the Coast Guard’s core values of honor, respect and devotion to duty. Petty Officer Moore, a machinery technician and boat crewman at the Canal Station, was this year’s Coast Guard Person of the Year. Petty Officer Moore received a wooden plaque depicting the Coast Guard Seal.

“The Mariner Award nominees for 2014 are a veritable who’s who of legendary figures in the storied maritime history of the Door Peninsula,” said Maritime Museum Executive Director Bob Desh. “They reflect the incredible diversity of the area’s nautical heritage. Each and every nominee was highly deserving…the selection committee faced an unenviable task of narrowing the choice to just three. I have no doubt that every one of these extraordinary individuals will find their name on the Mariner Award plaque at some point in the not too distant future.”
