Maritime Speaker Series Continues Feb. 6

The next Door County Medical Center Maritime Speaker Series presentation will be Don Mikulic’s “The Ledge, the Lake and the Limestone” on Feb. 6, 7 pm, in the Reddin Bridge Room of the Door County Maritime Museum (DCMM), 120 N. Madison Ave. in Sturgeon Bay.

Mikulic will discuss Silurian dolomitic strata outcropping along the bluffs of the Niagara Escarpment, which borders some of the Great Lakes shoreline. Early settlers found the stone to be an excellent building material.

Mikulic is a curator at the Weis Earth Science Museum in Menasha and a retired senior paleontologist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research focuses on Wisconsin Silurian and Devonian geology and paleontology.

The remaining presentations include “Built for Battle: Sturgeon Bay and World War II,” by DCMM curator Rhys Kuzdas on March 5; “Myths and Mysteries: Legends and Lore of Our Great Lakes,” by Dan Heibler on April 2; and “World War II and the Great Lakes,” by Wes Oleszewski on May 7.

Admission is free, with a suggested nonperishable food donation.
