Maritime Winter Speaker Series Continues

The Door County Maritime Museum and Friends of the Maritime Museum continue their popular Winter Speakers Series on the first Thursday of the month in both February and March, before winding up on March 25.

Representatives from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation in Green Bay will talk about the planning and progress associated with the Michigan Street Bridge rehabilitation on Feb. 4, and on March 4, the spotlight will be on Marine Travelift’s amazing, gargantuan 1,000-ton lift.

The museum’s Executive Director Bob Desh will present the final program in the series, a look at the International Ice Patrol and the role it has played tracking icebergs since being formed in the wake of the Titanic disaster. While in the U.S. Coast Guard, Desh served as the commanding officer of the Ice Patrol.

The Friends of the Door County Maritime Museum is an organization dedicated to assisting the museum both through fundraising projects and volunteer service. Admission to the programs is free. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends. Donations are appreciated.

In addition to these informative lectures, aspiring boat builders have an opportunity to gain first-hand skills in the age-old craft when the Door County Maritime Museum’s annual boat building class gets underway Jan. 23. Only two openings remain for the class, which retains a limited enrollment to enhance the learning experience. Classes are conducted on Saturdays through June.

The 2010 boat is a 14-foot Cosine wherry rowboat. It’s a John Harstock design featuring cedar strip construction with elegant lines. The wherry may be viewed on Ray Klebba’s White Salmon BoatWorks Web site at http://www.raysdreamboats.com. Tradition holds that the finished boat will be raffled off as the grand prize to benefit the Maritime Museum at the Door County Classic and Wooden Boat Festival held the first weekend in August. Tuition for museum members is $275 and guest tuition is $350.
