Vintage collector, stylist and crafter Katie Starr has been adding new holiday-themed pieces to “Re-acquainted,” her collection of assemblage art at Sturgeon Bay’s Greco Gallery. Starr combines and reimagines all sorts of vintage objects, creating works of art large and small.
Her new seasonal pieces include vintage bottlebrush trees, glass jars, wooden blocks, and wrapping paper and other ephemera. One new work, “Winter Hoops,” features a cluster of vintage embroidery hoops, all holding collages made from vintage fabric. Starr’s gift tags, a year-round favorite, are also available in Christmas themes and colors.
Starr’s creative touch has been put to use in her home, in storefronts and events all over the county. She was responsible for Greco Gallery’s current Christmas-themed window display, featuring a bicycle suspended in mid-air, and a dress form with a skirt of evergreen boughs. Her “Re-acquainted” assemblages, however, are a newer passion.
“One day I had that ‘aha’ moment and just started playing around with what I had – all these things speak to me on some level in their own way and somehow I listen to them and find a way to marry them together to make magic… so you could say I’m the matchmaker of crafting, re-acquainting things one object at a time.”
