May 18 – June 11

• Wisconsin’s drunk driving laws get tougher July 1. Many drivers who would have previously been cited with non-criminal offenses will now be subject to criminal charges and penalties.

The key provisions of the new law include criminal charges for a first OWI offense if there is a child under 16 in the vehicle, with an increased penalty of five days to six months in jail, and criminal charges for a third OWI offense, with a mandatory minimum jail time increase of 30 days to 45 days. A fourth OWI offense is now a Class H felony if committed within five years of a prior offense.

• Coordinated Community Response to Sexual Assault will host a presentation on Solving Internet Crimes at its meeting June 3 from noon – 1 pm.

• The Town of Jacksonport will bid out ditch grass cutting services. Traditionally the Door County Highway Department has cut the grass in the ditches along the town’s 44 miles of roads, but those costs have been steadily rising, according to Town Chairwoman Jeanne Majeski.

“It took a big jump last year, when fuel prices were lower than in 2008,” Majeski said. “Now there are other services included in their bill beyond grass cutting, such as sign repair and litter pickup, so it may not all be related to cutting. But it never hurts to take a look at options to save money.”

Last winter the town contracted with Peil Construction for snow plowing, which Majeski said saved the town money.

“It worked out well,” she said. “With the county, they’re responsible for clearing highways and trunk roads first, so we’re lower on their priority list. But with a private contractor, we’re the top priority.”

• The Town of Baileys Harbor will host a Cognitive Mapping Meeting at the Town Hall June 15 at 7 pm. The meeting is part of the town’s review and update of its 2005 Comprehensive Plan.

• Amanda Surfus of the Door County Soil and Water Conservation Department will give a presentation on beach contamination and reduction projects on June 8 at the Paul J. Bertschinger Center in Egg Harbor. The presentation starts at 4 pm, with refreshments at the village beach to follow at 5:50 pm at a visit to review the beach reconstruction project.
