McDowell Favors Bold Shapes and Shadows

The Hillside Inn of Ephraim is excited to welcome Dorothy McDowell as its showcased artist for August. McDowell’s original plein air paintings will be displayed in the first floor lobby area of the recently reopened historic inn.

McDowell looks for bold shapes and shadows in the landscape to create strong compositions. Architecture, boats and geometric shapes are favorites. Working in acrylics, and more recently in oils, she strives to create images that convey a sense of fresh atmosphere, using a loose impressionist style. The challenge in painting plein air is immediate and invigorating. The sensations of being out in nature – fresh breezy air, changing light and clouds, shadows and colors – all simultaneously assault the senses. Drawing on her strong background in art and design, McDowell makes quick visual choices to express her keen interest and feelings about a particular landscape. She is currently a member of the Door County Art League (DCAL) and has been the coordinator of the DCAL Plein Air Painters for four years.

Visit the Hillside Inn of Ephraim daily between 10 am and 3 pm to see McDowell’s work. The Hillside Inn of Ephraim is located at 9980 Water Street in Ephraim. For more information visit hillsideofdoorcounty.com.
