Mediterranean Flavors at T. Ashwell’s

The Kaheena Belly Dance Troupe will once again collaborate with the wonderful flavors, atmosphere, and culinary art that is T. Ashwell’s restaurant in Ellison Bay for the eighth annual Mediterranean Nights. Running Thursday, January 31, Friday, February 1 and Saturday, February 2, patrons are invited to take a magic carpet ride to an enchanting oasis in the midst of Door County’s winter wonderland.

The Kaheena Belly Dance Troupe is in its seventh year of shimmying and shaking for their audience’s pleasure. Founded in 2001 by Andrea Nikoupolis-Weliky, the performing troupe has been invited to participate in such events as the Door County Fair and Green Bay’s Art Street. The troupe has also performed for fundraising events for numerous Door County non-profit organizations.

Belly dancing is an ancient and beautiful art-from that originates from the earliest times through the days of the pharos, the Roman Empire, to the Arab world of the last three centuries. Formerly known as “Dance Oriental,” belly dance did not get its name sake in the United States until the Chicago Worlds Fair of 1893. In recent times belly dancing has become an exiting new way to get an aerobic workout. Regardless of the reason – art-form or workout – belly dancing is a wonderful way for women to connect with their own special femininity.
