Memorial Day Ceremonies 2017

  • Southern Door, Sunday, May 28: The firing squad from George W. Goetz Post 372 Forestville American Legion will conduct Memorial Day services at the following locations and times:

7:20 am, Forestville Town (Maplewood)

7:30 am, Namur (Pit Road)

7:40 am, Brockhausen

7:50 am, Miesere

7:55 am, Brown

8:05 am, Kolberg

8:20 am, Brussels

8:30 am, White Star

8:40 am, Precious Blood

9 am, Stevenson

9:10 am, Geises

9:20-9:45 am, break

9:55 am, Maplewood

10:10 am, Carnot

10:25 am, Clay Banks

10:35 am, Vignes

10:45 am, Mount Olive

10:55 am, Shiloh Moravian

11:05 am, Schumacher

11:15 am, Hainesville

1:35 am, Salem-Schulties

11:50 am, Forestville

12:10 pm, Old Catholic (between Maplewood and Forestville)

  • Sturgeon Bay, Monday, May 29, brief ceremonies will be conducted at Bayside Cemetery at 8:30 am, St. Joseph’s Cemetery at 9 am, and the Dorchester at 9:30 am. The main ceremony will be at 10 am in the Sturgeon Bay Fire Department bays. The Chaplain will be Pastor Joel Sauer of St. Peters Lutheran Church, and VFW Post 3088 will provide the rifle squad. The speaker will be Colonel (Ret.) John A. Scocos, former secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs. The Peninsula Symphonic Band will play patriotic music before and during the ceremony. Andy Anderson and Mary Nickel will sound echo “Taps.” Refreshments will be available after the ceremony and will be provided by AMVETS Post 51. Chairs will be available; lawn chairs can be brought in, as well.

 

  • Northern Door, Monday, May 29: Billy Weiss American Legion Post 527 and VFW Post 8337 of Ellison Bay will hold two Memorial Day Ceremonies. The first ceremony will be at 9 am at Hendrickson Park, on the corner of Mill Road and Hwy. 42 in the Village of Sister Bay. This will include a laying of a wreath honoring local veterans. The second service begins at 10:30 am at Little Sister Cemetery on Little Sister Road next to Bay Ridge Golf Course in Sister Bay. The service will begin with American Legion Post 527, VFW Post 8337 and the Boy Scouts marching to the Eldred and Millie Koepsel Memorial Flagpole to lower the flag to half-staff; Reverend Mark Billingham of First Baptist Church will lead the invocation. The First Baptist Church choir will sing a selection of songs. The Gibraltar High School Band, led by Navy veteran Charlie Eckhardt, will play a medley of military songs. Col. Tim Lawrie, U.S. Army, retired, will be the featured speaker. The names of the past year’s deceased veterans will be read by Don Sitte of Post 527 and Davis Sitte of VFW Post 8337. Post 527 Bugler Dale Seaquist will sound “Taps” for the 70th consecutive year. The ceremony concludes with the singing of “God Bless America” led by soloist Regina McIntosh. Please bring a chair. First Baptist Church, 2622 S. Bay Shore Drive, (Hwy. 42), Sister Bay, will be the location in case of rain.

 

  • Washington Island, Monday, May 29: The island ceremony will be held at 10:30 am at Bethel Church. There will be a reading of high school Americanism essays. Everyone will then march to the cemetery where there will be a reading of the names of departed comrades, bagpipes, rifle squad, and a bugler sounding “Taps.” Everyone will then march to Schoolhouse Beach, where there will be a laying of a wreath in the water for sailors lost at sea.
