Memorial Day Weekend Hikes at Crossroads Relocated

On the Friday and Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, the Collins Learning Center at Crossroads of Big Creek will be closed so people can participate in the Door County Festival of Nature and the Master Gardener Plant Sale. The profits of the plant sale help underwrite the Master Gardener Lecture Series which brings color to Crossroads during the snowy months.

The hikes planned for May 28 & 29 will be held at The Cove and the Ida Bay preserves, because if all goes as planned, construction will be underway at the Crossroads parking lot. Visitors are asked when construction is taking place to use their parking lot at the Maintenance Building off Michigan Street or the parking areas at the Astronomy Center and The Cove preserve, both off Utah Street.

On May 28 at 1 pm, hikers will walk through the dark hemlock forest at the Ida Bay Preserve. Hikers may see spring wildflowers in sunny patches. Meet at the Zenith Street entrance. The hike will last about 50 minutes.

On May 29 at 1 pm, join the naturalist in a gentle ramble to the dock where Big Creek enters into the Bay of Sturgeon Bay. Meet at the grass parking area at the intersection of Utah Street and 20th Place. This hike will last about an hour.

Both hikes are free and open to the public.

The Collins Learning Center, located at 2041 Michigan, just east of the Highway 42/57 Roundabout in Sturgeon Bay, is open 2-4 pm daily and during scheduled activities. Trails in all preserves are open 24/7 free of charge.
