Mengert to Conduct Interactive Demonstration

Blue Dolphin House and BDH Studio are pleased to have re-scheduled the “Afternoon with the Artist” Series appearance of Carl Mengert, watercolor and mixed media artist. Mengert’s original appearance was cancelled due to weather; however, on Thursday, August 20 in the gardens from 1 – 4 pm, Mengert will be conducting an “Interactive Collage Event,” and the public is invited to participate.

A Door County resident, Mengert grew up and studied art in Milwaukee. After serving in WWII, he taught art in Edgerton, Wisconsin then earned a Master’s degree in Library Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He retired in 1985 and moved to Sturgeon Bay, where he and his family had summered since the early 1970s.

Upon retirement, Mengert returned to his first love of art and began studying with area artists Bridget Austin, Lionel Wathall, and James Range, who encouraged him to devote serious time to watercolors. After studying with Ratindra Das, Carl began to broaden his approach to watercolor and develop his own unique contemporary style.

Most recently Carl has become interested in stepping beyond traditional watercolor and exploring other media and the combination of it with textural collage in the form of paper manipulation and cutting. Even though his collection of work spans a variety of mediums, the one element that is evident throughout is his love of life and joy of creation.
