Men’s Club Scholarship Breakfast

More than 500 are expected on Aug. 2, at the annual scholarship breakfast held by the Ephraim Men’s Club at the Ephraim Village Hall, 9996 Water St. The breakfast runs from 7:30 to 11 am.

“Attendance seems to grow a little bit every year,” said Dick Volkmann, the club’s president. “It’s a nice event for the community, and it’s a pleasure to raise scholarship help for college students here.”

Since the breakfast’s inception half a century ago, it has raised more than $190,000 in scholarships to help students from northern Door County to attend college. Proceeds come from ticket sales and contributions from businesses, Ephraim residents and men’s club members.

Tickets are $9/adults and $5/children 12 and below and can be purchased at the door or from club members. Door prizes will be awarded every half-hour during the breakfast.

Bill Schumann, past president of the club, will emcee, handing out door prizes and interviewing some of the scholarship recipients from Gibraltar High School. The club is able to award as many as half a dozen scholarships a year, based on academic performance as well as need.

The Ephraim Men’s Club, in existence since 1912, is believed to be Wisconsin’s oldest continuing not-for-profit organization. Its earliest effort was to raise money for Northern Door High School, which became Gibraltar High School. It also assisted Peninsula State Park in the early years.
