Michigan Street Bridge Closed Following Hit

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region announced the Michigan Street Bridge in Sturgeon Bay, Door County is closed to all traffic until further notice following a bridge strike. A southbound vehicle hit multiple members of the overhead structure leading up to the lift span at approximately noon Oct. 6.

Northeast Region bridge engineers were on the scene Wednesday and conducting an initial inspection of bridge component parts and damage. Following initial inspection, details will be reviewed by the WisDOT Bureau of Structures to determine if the bridge is safe to open or will remain closed. No additional information will be available until the initial inspection and assessment is complete.

All traffic should use the Maple Oregon Street Bridge or the Bayview Bridge. Vehicles traveling in downtown Sturgeon Bay should expect increased traffic on all roads. Travelers are advised to plan additional time, be patient, and use an alternate route to cross the canal.
