Midsummer’s Music Continues Streaming Concerts

Midsummer’s Music (midsummersmusic.com) will feature three composers of color – George Walker, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Florence Price – during its second streaming concert program, Soaring Spirits, Aug. 12-16.

Walker’s quartet is heartfelt, even devout. Coleridge-Taylor’s piece reminds listeners of his ability to tap into European tradition while blending in his own style and mixed heritage. For her quintet, Price calls on her African American background, steeped in gospel, folk, work songs and the blues.

The free concerts will stream at midsummersmusic.com and on Midsummer’s Music’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. Lisa Flynn of WFMT Chicago will host Soaring Spirits, which will be broadcast in two segments of about 30 minutes each. Part I will stream Aug. 12, 7 pm; and Aug. 14, 8 pm. Part II will stream Aug. 13, 7 pm; and Aug. 15, 8 pm. An Aug. 16 matinee at 3 pm will combine Parts I and II and add live interviews with Artistic Director Jim Berkenstock and musicians.
