Midsummer’s Music Partners with Chicago Philharmonic

The Chicago Philharmonic is celebrating two influential black composers through its Dec. 6 David Perry & Friends program, presented in collaboration with Midsummer’s Music.

Violin virtuoso David Perry will join Scott Speck, the Chicago Philharmonic’s artistic director and principal conductor, as well as host of the Hear It Together series. They will provide historical context and performance perspective to this special chamber program, which showcases works by George Walker and Florence Price. Karen Walwyn, a recording artist and specialist in the works of Price, will be the featured speaker.

Allyson Fleck – Midsummer’s Music executive director, assistant artistic director and performer – will also join the introductory discussion about the program’s original setting and why composers Walker and Price “need to be heard in these strenuous times, as they remind us of the power and beauty of universal feelings expressed in music.”

The Dec. 6 event will begin at 4 pm with a NEXT! performance by Wendy Guiterrez of the Chicago Center for Music Education. The program will be streamed at chicagophilharmonic.org under the Concerts tab.
