MILLER’S JURIED ANNUAL OPENS SEPT. 17

The Miller Art Museum in Sturgeon Bay will unveil its 47th Juried Annual on Sept. 17, with an opening reception 5-6:30 pm. Awards – to be announced at 6 pm – include three special Merit Awards ($250 each), three Juror’s Choice Awards ($200 each), the Gerhard Miller Award of Excellence ($500 and the Miller Medal), and the Bonnie Hartmann Award for Outstanding Creativity ($100). Enjoy light refreshments and music by Craig Schultz. The exhibit will run through Oct. 31.

Claire Kat Erickson, “Planted,” acrylic.

Each entry was evaluated carefully, and a panel of three made the final selections. This year’s jurors were Frank Juarez, the founder and publisher of Artdose Magazine in Sheboygan; Brandon Bauer, an associate professor of art at St. Norbert College in De Pere; and Meg Lionel Murphy, an artist and the owner of The Hours Gallery in Sturgeon Bay.

Bryan Abign, “Resurrection,” oil.

Other events affiliated with the exhibit will be an Art/Speaks writing lab with Carrie Sherrill on Sept. 30, 11 am – 12:15 pm, when writers at all levels are invited to write in response to the art on display.

Then join Shan Bryan-Hanson – an artist, curator and professor – Oct. 13, 10:30-11:30 am, for a guided tour and critique of the Juried Annual exhibit. Get up close with works in the exhibition to explore the difference between “good” and “successful” artwork.
