Ministry Door County Medical Center Hosts “Art for Health” Children Workshops

The popular Art for Health workshops for children are beginning at the end of January. Sponsored by Ministry Door County Medical Center (MDCMC), these free workshops focus on music and art using performance, demonstrations and other fun activities with popular regional and local visual and performing artists.

Each class includes a project linked with the visual arts and performing arts. Activities for the children range from creating their own puppets to painting their own masterpieces to creating short, fun skits. Most classes include “jam sessions” with popular Door County musicians such as Dorothy Scott, Mike Bleck and Julian Hagan. Other guest artists in the visual and performing arts include Emily Salm, Jessa Lemke, Mary Innis, Ross Dipple, Gail Johnson, Ed DiMaio, Dan Riley, Audrey Off and others.

Each Art for Health session runs for five consecutive weeks. Participants can choose a Tuesday (ages 4 to 7) or a Wednesday (ages 8 to 12) class. The first session will begin Jan. 24 and 25 and run through Feb. 21 and 22. All classes will be held at MDCMC in Sturgeon Bay from 4 – 5:30 pm.

“It is well documented by scientific studies that art can have a physical impact on not only the quality of a life, but on the actual functioning of our immune system, healthy cell structure and both the autonomic and sympathetic nervous systems,” said Steve Quade of MDCMC. “Art can be used to help relieve stress, provide comfort during times of illness and improve children’s brain development.”
